No, it's such a smeg of a line the filter will kick in automatically. Wink

I don't get why one swear word is replaced with another. I say we can it.

I vote for the filter to either go or change to say "f--k" or "f**k" or similar conventions.

The only words that should be censored should be "F", "C" (the really bad "C"), and maybe "S".

The others are in widespread use by most if not all 8 year olds anyway.

I vote to keep the filter.

I suggest that "c ock" be added to the lexicon of acceptable words. It is not often used as an offensive term these days, falling into the "poo" and "bum" category of "swearing".

As has been said earlier, the reporting of posts will be instrumental in controlling the offensive use of any term, but why make it too easy for people?

In any case, it is possible to insult other members of RP by imaginative use of the English language without resorting to four-letter words. Whether this ought to occur in a civilised online forum such as RP is up to our members and moderators.

Place your bets.

There is no point in replacing the middle characters of a swear word with stars. It makes zero difference. The filter needs to be either all or nothing. I say keep it as it is, with the possible exception of steam engine related words.

Possible, yes. But is it always desirable?

I have a long-held loathing of the rather smug position that "if you resort to the use of an expletive, you've lost the argument." [Not saying you particularly hold this view, Jatz]

I'm sorry, but that is just wrong. A true wordsmith can, of course, say anything he or she likes without swearing, BUT no true wordsmith would voluntarily deny himself use of a whole section of the vocabulary of the English language. It's a big and beautiful language, and I want to be able to use it all, dammit. To me, it's as silly as those exercises primary school kids get: "Replace the word 'got' in the folowing sentences". "Got" is a great word, and so is "f**k".

Yes, I can think of a witty non-swearing put-down, but remember: SOME PEOPLE AREN'T WORTH IT. You just want to tell them where to go.

Well put TLD™, that is the main crux of the matter, at times you just want to tell someone where to go, with out going into long winded terms etc, as most judges would say can you put it into plain English so everyone can understand what you are saying! Cool

Can I also make an appeal for the words c.rap and c.rappy? If you can write hell, bollocks and bastard then c.rap isn't going to worry anyone?

I didn't say that kids weren't swearing; my point was not to encourage adults to swear infront of kids.

A bunch of kids were swearing their heads off outside the front entrance to Harvey Norman yesterday afternoon. I felt like telling them to shut their filthy little mouths... Smile

Yes,

this in Tony Mercury's post on the Unfortunate Mall:

Tony Mercury wrote:

smeg Groves, a retail consultant based in nearby Hong Kong, chalks it up to inexperience in the leasing business, mixed with an undisciplined financial system. “When it’s easy to get financing without having to convince someone of the project’s feasibility, and without having to show pre-leasing commitment, you can start to get into trouble,” he says.
