What's the go? I tried to access this area and it says that "You are trying to access a restricted area. We are Sorry but this section of our site is for Railpage Australia™ Testers Only". This is the main reason I joined this forum to hopefully see the trains and other stuff of my past. I'm 46 and from Sydney originally and would like to see pictures of 44's and 48's and red rattlers etc. How does one gain access?

Cheers,

Matt.

You might be better off going to that thread which lists all our member websites and trawling though there for photos.

'tis in the Railway Photography thread.

As far as I know, it is still limited to gallery testers. Takes 3 minutes and 90mb on the server to load that first page. Individual galleries load faster. We need a totally revamped gallery module or a whole new gallery on a subdomain, I daresay. Shocked

Confirmed access to gallery using the link above, speeds OK - Good on Optus Cable.

Indeed. So long as the site itself is online that link will produce access to our gallery module. Doesn't work when the rest of the site of having a hissy fit though.

Log-in is disabled meaning the actual contents cannot be changed however messages can still be posted beneath existing photos and it is good to be able to see some of the long-hidden work in there. Very Happy

THE GALLERY IS OFFLINE

Of course you can't log into the Gallery using that link; it never has had integration with Nuke, and never will.

All that does is show the response time to the server, not how long it takes for that page to load. ie if the site goes offline or takes two minutes to generate a page (neither uncommon), you'll find that you'll still get that same response time when you ping the server.

The speed of the gallery has been greatly improved, but it's still nowhere near quick enough for a re-launch.

As for having it on a sub-domain, that won't fully solve the problem. Aside from the fact that you can have the a subdomain on the same server as the main domain (ie supernaut, the RP server), a lot of the bloat comes from the Nuke code. So while you'll get a great improvement in speed if we moved to a completely new gallery, it still wouldn't be as fast as if it ran natively because of the Nuke integration.

Let me just take this moment to point out that I have spent a lot of time and effort on trying to fix this gallery. For new members, the problems didn't start when we moved to the new server; that certainly didn't help, but it didn't start there. Back in the day we had the Gallery on the same server as RP. Then it moved to a few different servers, before its hunger for system resources (CPU and RAM) knocked the hosting server out on a daily basis. Then it lay dormant until we moved to this new, "more powerful" VMWare-based server.

It doesn't work for a number of reasons; the main reason being the code behind it is crap. After all the time I've spent on it, I've got the majority of it working under 64-bit PHP5 (which it was never designed to support). I've even sped it up quite significantly. As I'm sure 574M can attest to, browsing individual albums or state albums - actually, scratch that - anything that's not the index page is quite fast. The problem lies in the index page having to load the data file for every album before it even renders the page. That means not only a lot of CPU usage and RAM usage, but a butt-load of disk activity - the main reason Icarus (ie gallery.railpage.com.au) died on a daily basis. And what's the point in re-launching it when the index - the main portal for it - would cause the site hang when more than 20 people are connected to it?

Hence it stays offline until I find a fix for it.

The link above works, one can access the gallery, one can look at photos. Speed is less than favorable. Michael Greenhill is right about logging in, not possible.

But one can look at photos.

By the way; if you read this thread, mjja, what OS do you use?

He uses OS/2, or some other ancient operating system. The kernel was written on clay tablets, that's how old it is.

With respect to the oft-mentioned reasons that the Gallery is "offline" it quite clearly IS accessible for viewing and the posting of comments from the link provided.

One is left to assume that, since it has been "offline" to the majority of all members for well over a year that "Where Is It?" (last changed 6th June 2008) and Fake Photos (last changed 28th July 2008) have been the playground of the testers.

I have timed it and it takes approx. 20 seconds for the main page of the Railpage Australia™ Gallery to load Smile

Spot on.
I've sent MGH™ some test results and some timings for page loads. Its all grief.

Individual galleries, teriffic load times.

Makes you think RP has turned back to clag, waiting for that. Just took three minutes again tonight, to load the index page

That's a lot of server resources, and most people would be unaware that image gallery browsing was causing all the problems.

Have to agree with MGH™, although. You can't have your cake (Railpage Australia™) and eat it too (Image Gallery) ...

I'd say for all intents and purposes it has been offline.

I posted a comment tonight on one fake photo, so that album has already updated showing todays' date.

But there's no new photos in there. I haven't posted any photos in the testing albums for over a year, and won't do so until MGH™ asks me to.

One could split up the members gallery and shared galley etc, in to two seperate sections (Not sub directories like they are now). That would drasticly reduce the amount of time needed for loading
