........from someone who has spent waaay too long searching through all these threads. These useless trivia topics have bugged me for awhile.
Flinders St Platform 1.
This used to be listed as the longest platform in the country ( I think it also incorporated the Platform 14 end in that length - since it's all continuous)
Has the building work for Fed Square changed that length at all?
Is "ours" still bigger than everyone else's? 
Another platform 1 question.
Right up at the western end is a small "shunting" space (I assume) with a squirt of a platform on the Flinders St side of Platform 1.
Does this mini-platform have a designation? "0"? "-1"? "1a"?
Lastly.... about the kilometre markers. I have always assumed (and read in a few places I think) that they showed the distance to Spencer St Station, along the same lines that I think all the road markers measure the distance to the GPO in the city (or quite possibly the old mail centre opposite Spencer St/SC).
Sooooo......... what does the "00" marker up behind Festival Hall (*just* north of Dudley St) signify? If this is the "zero" point, why is it an arbitrary point in the middle of nowhere - or is there some history (eg past buildings etc) about that location?
There's also another one with a big number like "645" or something between the LaTrobe St bridge and Spencer St. (I'll try to check that No tonight) What's THAT one for?
And whereabouts at Spencer St/SC is the "zero" point? If it was the far end of the old Platform 1, is there anything to signify where it is now?

IIRC Fed Square project cut the platform by a small amount(5 meters?)
East Perth GSR/TransWA terminal platform 1 still beats Flinder Street platform one.

'85 Guiness Book of Records listed FS1 as the longest in Australia.
Admittedly that's 22 years ago (oh jezz I'm getting old).
I was wondering what may have changed around the country since.
5 metres off the end???!!!?? Noooooooo!!!!!

Don't know about now, but back in the G-O-Ds, it was the "Parcels Dock"

The book might be a bit out of date, East Perth exceeded FSS in early 1970 and stayed that way since then

One upon a time, platform 1 was almost never used by sparks. Clifton Hill group trains used platforms 14, 15 and 16 at Princes Bridge station, and platform 1 was used for country trains, even up until the 1980s. It wasn't until the 1990s redevelopment that one could get from the Swanston Street concourse down onto platform 1...

Prior to opening of City Loop - platform 1 Flinders St was split into three distinct sections 1 West, 1 Centre & 1 East .
Gippsland and some Geelong trains used 1 Centre . Clifton Hill sparks used 1 East (as well as the two platforms at the then Princes Bridge station), some other country trains also used 1 West on Sundays. On Weekdays electric Parcels Coaches used 1 West & adjoining Parcels Dock .

Correct.
I West, used for peak hour docks
I Center, used for peak hour Ringwood group
I East, used for PB (Greensboro locals, the screens used that spelling, Greensboro, and the famous 5.00 Lilydale, and others of a lesser nature
The other question you refer [0] was the Parcels Dock. Was used by Parcels Vans, like so: (Copyright Peter J. Vincent)

Prior to the 1950's, Platform 1 Centre was mainly used by Gippsland steam trains, also to South Gippsland (Yarram and Wonthaggi). In the peak hour one of those trains would use 1 East. There were also some through steam trains to Healesville, Warburton and Stony Point which would use 1 East, although some would be hauled by an M and an AM pair of swing door cars to Lilydale or Frankston. Race trains to Caulfield or Mordialloc used 10 East and 11 East. Showgrounds and Flemington race trains would use Platform 1 Centre mostly The 11.25 pm Geelong train seven nights a week used 1 East.
The two platforms at Princes Bridge were numbered 15 and 16. There was no 12,13 and 14, as the extensions to platforms 10 and 11 under Swanston Street were numbered 10 East and 11 East

Thanks people!! Great info. As a little kid we'd only ever caught the red rattlers into Princes Bridge. to me that was THE station, but I could never work out why the numbering started at 14.
I can still remember the day when I suddenly realised with big wide innocent eyes that there was this massive OTHER station further up!!!
Still no ideas on the "00" behind Festival Hall??
Anyone?......Anyone?......Beuller?........ Beuller?.......

Just re-hashing this old question I had about the '00' marker.
Took this on the way to the footy a couple of weeks ago when the train FINALLY crawled along at the point where I wanted it to.
The marker is between Rosslyn St (which runs along Festival Hall behind the bush in the picture) and Stanley St. The black and white building with the gaudy blue edge is Festival Hall itself, and that's the western corner.
No pressing need for an answer. Just trying to satisfy my curiosity.
