As their website reports, the Spirit of the West will not run after 31 May 2008.
This is a shame. From what I have read and heard, it was a fantastic restaurant, was well patronised and was not losing money. Why have South Spur decided to throw in the towel? I was planning to go on it soon too. Sad

The world is being strangled by public liability insurance and litigation and nobody seems to notice!

You must remember this restraunt train is not in the core bussiness of Coote who own South Spur. It would bring in peanuts for a company that owns a big trucking company, GTSA Engineering, Gemco and RTS [in east]. It was more a hobby for the previous owners. Anyway if all of you on here think its so profitable and must be kept buy the thing and run its yourselves. You will get one hell of a surprise at what it cost just to start up let alone operate it.

Well said......the average person would not be aware of the costs before the train even turns a wheel, sadly the biggest loser will probably be RHWA.

So I guess the Sydney Suburban at East Perth has travelled across the country to be scrapped in Western Australia. Pity.

Why would it be scrapped?

If the train does not lose money and is popular with customers and is (or could be) publicity for the company, why shut it down?

Well I am sure the PTA will not want it there when the service folds, and they maybe able to sell it to someone. But either way, it is going to cost money. And just because a service does not lose money, does mean get rid of it in todays corporate people. It is the not the 1st service or the last to hit the rocks even if it is doing well. This is what you get with non government rail business's.

I dont think it would be sold, I imagine it will continue to be used as an office either at the Midland site or at Maddington.

More importantly, what will happen to the cars used on the train?

The wooden cars belong to the ARHS (WA) or whatever they call themselves now.

I don't know who owns the steel cars. I thought the HRGA originally belonged to the ARHS but the other steel cars were purchased from G&W.

The observation would be useful to GSR on the new Southern Spirit for their "Platinum" class.
