Quote:
More than 100 drivers have been warned after a month of monitoring Australia's first railway red-light cameras at two notorious Perth level crossings.

The cameras, at Welshpool and Maddington, were installed last year. However, the Public Transport Authority did not begin cautioning drivers until last month as it tested the cameras to ensure they would stand scrutiny in court....Each site has three digital cameras - one still camera in each direction and one movie camera.

Infringements are issued under the Road Traffic Code, meaning drivers who are caught face a $200 fine and four demerit points. Ms McCarrey said the penalty reflected how serious the offence was viewed.

"This is not a revenue-raising exercise. It is being done to address dangerous driving," she said. "Collisions between cars and trains generally involve fatalities, and the worst part is they are avoidable if road users obey the rules."

The law states motorists must stop when a crossing's warning bells and flashing lights are operating, and must not enter it at all when the boom gates are down, or being raised or lowered. Vehicles also must not enter a crossing if there is a queue ahead that would prevent it from leaving the crossing immediately.

While the lights are flashing red, I am entitled to complete my crossing of the crossing.

It is only when the lights go steady red, that I must actually stop!

Maybe the PTA will finally get the money they need to remove the "etch" on the windows of the railcars? Laughing

Millions would be raised from a camera at Daddow Road, although I can understand the frustration of drivers caught there.

The world is being strangled by public liability insurance and litigation and nobody seems to notice!
