Newport stabling

Rumblings around the place is that the tarp shop area of Newport Workshops (presently used by Steamrail for their steam locos) and the sidings along the Geelong line (used for rotting museum pieces) are to get cleared out and turned into a new spark stabling yard for the new trains coming. Other passing mentions suggest the current Melbourne Yard spark stabling and train wash will be shifted there as well.

Given the State Government's history of announcing and re-announcing every project no matter how small it is, why are they so silent on these works? Are they afraid of something?

Newport would be/is a poor location for train stabling IMO - it's not near the end of any line (except Williamstown) so obviously trains would have to run empty to either Werribee or the CBD starting runs. Melbourne Yard is a better location for the few trains that need to be stabled near the CBD.

I'd rather see Werribee get some stabling. Why is the only stabling on that 30km long line line located at Newport, while the Craigieburn and Sydenham lines which are both shorter have stabling at 2 locations each? (St Albans and Watergardens, and Broadmeadows and Craigieburn respectively).

The rumour about SRV's tarp shop yard would be true...

Indeed true. In fact I was surprised to see rotten row still there the other day, I thought the scrappers were coming at the end of April.

What items will be scrapped?

The last time I walked through that area the Harris motors were residing there , I assume and hope they're for relocation.

Not all the items in the Tarp Yard will be getting scrapped. Actually, there isnt many items at all. Most of the stuff is just going to get relocated.

Taking it to Simsmetal is 'relocation' somewhere. So is turning it into cat food tins. Twisted Evil

Perhaps while they spend all the money on new tracks/ overhead/ infrastructure etc at newport they could spend money on a railway museum! One like every other state has.

but you would have more luck piisssing straight in the wind rather than that happening.

Or maybe fill up East Block? and other roads around Newport. Just because PN seems to be scrapping everything in sight doesnt mean everyone else has too.

Old thread and all, but work will start soon. An advert in the Herald Sun on Wednesday from Mainco asked for contractors for the Newport Workshops stabling project.

Features include:
- nineteen 200 m long sidings
- some mainline trackwork
- amenities building for 80 to 100 people
- 80 carparks
- Start work in July 2009 and end in June 2010

Right through the old Tarp Yard and across to the training centre. The training centre is being located. Basically the stabling sidings will go from the Geelong Line fence at Newport right across to the fence that borders the training centre and West Block.

Passing by on the train yesterday I noticed most of the stuff hidden away beside the tarp shop (E class electric, M class shunter, the one-off yellow B van) had been moved to the throat of the rotten road sidings.

I went past this morning and most it had gone, with the dead end of the sidings all cleared. Only 1/3 of the rolling stock there the day before remained. I assume it has been moved into the Steamrail area.

They have been quiet busy moving stuff over the past few weeks. You can see the stuff that has been moved on a Williamstown train. Also, M231 has been shunting most of the stuff over.

9 minutes of shunting wagons from the tarp shops, taken Saturday. Loco's include R761, M231, Y136 & Y164. There's only about 2 rakes left of wagons to be brought over to west block.

Hope you guys and girls like the video.

I noticed the yard was quite empty this morning, what part of West Block are the wagons getting moved to? Just out the front of the main workshops? Or down the west side in the tarp shop headshunt?

There was a rake put in the head shunt between the Tarp Shop and West Block, and the others are going down near the fence near the training centre and West block.

I've also uploaded some pics.

Found this on a crawl.

This came from an "expression of interest brief"

additional stabling sidings - to • optimise the utilisation of the existing rolling stock fleet requires the construction of additional and appropriately located stabling sidings, (ideally a 20 percent margin above the number required) to enable more effective management of the existing fleet, particularly in terms of capacity to re-marshal defective trains. Additionally, the current shortfall in stabling capacity means each new X’Trapolis train will also require a new stabling siding to be provided; an overall allowance of 20 percent will also be required to facilitate the marshalling of defective units
"DOI"

also found this in the same document:

an upgrade of commissioning • facilities; the commissioning of the most recently delivered train fleets in 2002-2006 was undertaken in existing maintenance facilities. This placed considerable pressure on the supply of trains for day-to-day passenger services, particularly during peak periods. With increasing patronage, the pressures on train availability have become even greater and it is possible that the availability of trains for peak services will be compromised if the new X’Trapolis trains are commissioned in the existing facilities, as they currently stand

This is off topic for this thread, I know, but I wonder if it means the construction of an entirely new facility to "commission" trains, and if so, where will this be?

It certainly could be interpreted that way. I have my suspicions that it really just is referring to our shortage of stabling space, more than building a purpose-built facility. However, I may well be completely wrong there.

I like the idea of having a maintenance facility designed for receiving and commissioning new trains. We really need to have an ongoing plan for receiving new trains, rather than sporadic bulk orders.
