Therein lies the big problem.
If the banks are looking for a combined $1 billion, that has to be by someone paying for a monopoly operation.
It would be fantastic if the Federal Government's Infrastructure Fund could buy the track on behalf of ARTC and open track access allowed competition.
However, the rail operation is profitable and commands most of the sale price. Selling it on its own as is would contradict all competition policy existing in this country. Selling it without the monopoly rights would seriously devalue the South Australian and Northern Territory taxpayers investments in the project.
A no win situation. Once again privatisation fails.

According to the directors of the company, someone with a different debt structure could make the line work. Last years profit, before debt was serviced, was $30,000,000. One of the things not going Freightlink's way is that some of the ore traffic is taking longer to start than originally expected. Once Oxiana starts shipping ore from Wirrida to Darwin, things could be drastically different.
Also, according to the original Asia Pacific contract, if the business is sold, ARTC is supposed to get the first offer on the infrastructure. I don't see how the business could be sold as a job lot with this clause in the original BOOT contract.

From what I have been told, the 4 FQ's ans 2 FJ's aswell as all FreightLink owned rolling stock is incluided in the sale, as is the Freightlink name.
Owners of the mine at Pine Creek are interested in purchasing the rolling stock used to service their mine, shame it is leased from CFCLA, not owned by FL.

Hmm,
The UK company Freightliner http://www.freightliner.co.uk/default.aspx?PageID=210 have been talking about coming to Australia for a couple of years. The core FreightLink long haul intermodal and ore businesses may be attractive to them, same sort of work they do in UK and Poland.

I can safely say they are not one of the 3 companies that have been mentioed around the traps up here in Darwin.
In time we will ind out who will buy it. I belive a sale wll be sooner then later.

I think you will find the clause only relates to the Tarcoola to Alice section. Still would complicate any sale though.

I think you mean Federal Government. Canberra residents barely get a say in local Canberra affairs, let alone anything else, and the local ACT Government couldn't manage a...... um, let's no go there.

Yeah, they'd be as good as any. They can bring 100 of their Class 66s too - I think they'd be OK on Australian track.

I know what I'm about ti say is blasphemy...
Yet if the federal government had a long term vision, it would appreciate the tangible value of this possible asset over the long term for combined transport infrastructure...
I personally would like to see it a publicly owned asset and used to encourage the use of rail freight over road long haul freight.
The infrastructure is already there, and using this to discourage the current road freight mentality will also save them in the improvement of road infrastructure, reduce risks of road freight to the average vehicle etc...
May be young'n'dumb, yet unlike some, I've heart!

ARTC ownership would probably be a backward move considering how little attention/investment they have given the TAR in recent years.
Mate, if that loco pulls as hard as you do, it'd move anything.

I suppose banks are more concerned with lending money these days and don't want to get involved with something like the pulp mill which could be percieved as high (political) risk.
Back to the topic though the sale is not a given fact the banks are merely putting the idea out there to see if anyone will come up with the right amount of dough. The fact is the line will make money but the banks just don't want to wait 10 years for it to happen they want it now. It was only maybe a year ago they tried to get someone to buy into the consortium but noone was interested, so they waited awhile and now Freightlink has picked up a few more contracts they're having another go. They're trying to capitalise off the back of the mining boom.
Mate, if that loco pulls as hard as you do, it'd move anything.
I'd still rather have an ALCo.
