Does anyone know of a way to get to/from Yass/Cootamundra from/to Canberra to meet/get off the overnight Sydney-Melbourne XPT?

Countrylink have a connecting coach that meets the daylight Sydney-Melbourne XPT at Yass/Cootamundra, but I don't know of anything for the overnight XPT.

Greyhound have a coach leaving Canberra at 8.30pm that stops at Cootamundra railway station on its way to Melbourne, but you would then have to wait 3hrs for the Melbourne bound XPT.

Does anyone know anything I don't??

Transborder came to mind, as I see their Yass-bound coach of an afternoon. But looking at their timetables, they only run during the day (not surprisingly). They could get you back to Canberra on the return journey, but it'd mean waiting around Yass for nearly four hours, in the early hours of the morning. I'm not even sure if the bus goes anywhere near Yass Junction, but you'd have plenty of time to walk if it doesn't. Razz

(EDIT: Looking at Greyhound's timetable, they'd probably be a better option than Transborder anyway; only about a three hour wait, and not as far to walk.)

Unless you've got your heart set on rail, I'd either bus it all the way (not terribly appealing, though), or fly.

Transborder buses go to the main Yass township, which is a few km's from Yass Junction station.

You could never walk it, let alone at night. How does walking down some dark country roads past a lot of paddocks sound? Wink

Better off getting a local taxi to the station. Not much in Yass Township that you could do to kill 4 hours - maybe find a restaurant and eat dinner or something, but most places bar Woolworths would be closed. Yass Jungo station is out in the middle of nowhere.

You could always go to Goulburn if you pick the right day of the week.

Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
Depart Canberra at 1705 arriving Goulburn at 1840 or even up to Moss Vale arriving at 1932.
Hang around either for a meal.
Depart Moss Vale 2230 or Goulburn 2320 for Melbourne.

Might cost more of course.

The trip from Melbourne to Canberra presents even more of a problem, given that the overnight Melbourne to Sydney XPT goes through Yass Junction at about 3am.

A variation on TE2815's idea would be to stay on the XPT towards Sydney until a saner time, then catch the XPL back to Canberra. However, that won't get you back to Canberra until lunch time, and there's probably an extra cost involved.

In short, I don't think it's practical.

Reluctantly considering driving to Yass Junction. Anyone know how safe it is leaving a car at Yass Junction railway station over the weekend? Cheers.
