I think I know the one you’re talking about. I remember a few years ago when I was younger, my Dad and I were coming back from Parramatta after going to a football game and among the commotion, we jumped on the wrong train and didn't realise it until the train stopped at Merrylands.

We opted for Fairfield, since the train we were on Terminated there anyway.

I blame my dad for that one, since here was the one say 'just get on' as little Freddy was trying to see what it said on the indicators back at Parramatta Razz

Hi All,

I remember a Cronulla train in the mid 1990's used to stop from Bondi Junction all to Redfern, Sydenham, Rockdale, Kogarah, Hurstville, Mortdale, Sutherland, Gymea, Caringbah and Cronulla. I remember this one cos a mate used to work at Central platform 24/25.

Another goodie from Penrith in the afternoon around 1988. All to Seven Hills, Westmead, all to Lidcombe, Strathfield, Redfern, then all to North Sydney, St Leonards, Chatswood, Lindfield all to Berowra.

Still another was the 2.58pm from Sydney that went to Glenbrook terminated and headed back to Lidcombe then into Flemington Car Sidings so the crew could change ends then went back to Lidcombe and headed to Mt Victoria. I can't remember the stopping pattern of all three runs, I was about 18 and working at Westmead when the train ran, it was mostly a 4 or 6 car U boat but occasionally a V set took it's place.

I guess one more would have to be the 7.17am from Sydney Terminal to Helensburgh a 6 car U boat.

A real express train for world youth day weekdays - Western Line.

1:43pm from Central stopping Blacktown, Penrith & Emu Plains.

The previous Emu Plains service at 1:40pm will get you to Penrith or Emu Plains 29 minutes later.

It's also one of those trains where you don't want to get on at Central assuming it stops at Redfern. Otherwise you're in for a long nasty trip. Smile

Almost accidentally got onto a Liverpool bound train at Circular Quay this evening (Plat. 1 - Inner), Stopping pattern being all to Central then straight to Merrylands Shocked then all to Livo.

Raichase and I thought it was just a mistake on the screen but a double check with the guard of the train confirmed with us it's a extra service for WYD. Got off at Wynard anyway, as I changed to the regular Campo via Granville service, as I need to get to Ashfield. Now that would of been a funny story if I did get onto that special service (and running into some TOs with a Green Travelpass Idea ).

Also, I noticed there was some confussed commuters at Wynyard too! Laughing

I wonder how many other werid extra services are provided to WYD. I just assumed they would just start from Monday?

More memories from the late 70's:

For real express trains on the Illawarra - who remembers the:
City Circle, Central, Refern, Sydenham, Jannali all to Cronulla afternoon expresses in the mid to late 70's?

To the opposite extreme who remembers the late night (after midnight) Central and all stations to Penrith (yes, Macdonaldtown, Newtown etc).

And what I would consider the most unusual run in existence:

at 1:10 am a 620 set departed Eveleigh and stopped at Erskineville to take on passengers, then stopped at all stations to Bankstown, all stations to Lidcombe and all stations to Sydney Terminal. It then formed a service to Richmond. For many years this service had "a" stops everywhere except Sydenham, Bankstown, Lidcombe and Strathfield so it would only stop if required. However in its last year of operation (1979?) it was all regular stops around the Bankstown. Interesting trip on a 620 set.

1982 had an apprx 2:00pm train from Sydney Terminal to Sandown, then continued from Sandown to Pippita and Abattoirs. Then back to Lidcombe. Usually operated by a single CPH.

That one lasted much longer than you give it credit for - The latest I can find it is the 11/9/88 timetables. Coincidentally(?) however, the 1990 timetable shows a 4am departure from Sydney, all stops via Sydenham, Bankstown, Lidcombe back to the city, but then goes around the CC and becomes a regular service.

I am SO moving to Victoria Street!!

Just yesterday (16th July), I went to Mount Druitt station to find a service running only to Blacktown, Parramatta, Auburn, and Central. Probably another World Youth Day run.

Back in the early 1960s there was a Mon-Fri steam hauled service out of Central [country platforms] that terminated at Otford, of all places! Why? Who would know, but possibly it was because Otford was the official limit of the suburban services then and it had to have a peak hour service from town. It arrived just on dark, say 6.30pm or so, the engine ran around and then it ran back towards the city, empty cars I think. It was sometimes hauled by a 36 class, which was a bit more than needed for the job.
I think there was a morning equivalent into town also, originating in Otford.
I don't have a suburban timetable from that period to confirm the details but I bet someone here will be able to look it up.
Of course the Cityrail brand had not been invented then.

WYD extra train would be my guess.

Don't the Wyong services run from Blacktown, to Central and then up via the Shore?

Some do?

Quite a few times i've seen the Oscars bound for Gosford or Wyong via the City just waiting at platform 3, Blacktown.

Is there any Penrith to Gosford via the City services which use an Oscar?

You want a real express train? The 19:35 Penrith to Sydney Terminal stopping Sydney Terminal only.

While I have been working at Central I have noticed a few extra services for WYD.

Wollongong Train, first stop Waterfall then all stations.
Fairfield Train, First stop Strathfield then Lidcombe, Granville all to Fairfield.
St Marys Train, Redfern, Strathfield, Lidcombe, Granville then all to St Marys
Gosford Train, First stop Hornsby then Berowra, HR, Woy Woy then all to Gosford.

There were a few transposed trains yesterday. CityCircle trains stoping at Museum, St James, Circular Quay then Central.

There were also a Cronulla and a Waterfall service leaving from 22/23.

There have also been alot of 8 Car OSCars doing the South Coast and Gosford/Wyong services.

Very Interesting Night, lets see what tonight brings.

Do Do Do Attention Passengers, the 9:17 Empty Train via the Eastern Subburbs and Illawarra line will now depart from platform 4. Please make your way to platform 4.
