Does anyone know roughly how long (after training) before I could become qualified on Intercity and then prospectively get starts & finishes out of Newcastle (Broadmeadow?)
I want to commute to Sydney as little as possible... |
There have been guys transfer over within 12 months of taking up, but I suggest that you had better get used to the idea of commuting. |
They should really tell you this kind of stuff before they take you on. Generally speaking, if you survive all the training and pass all the assessments, and they turn you loose as an ETR driver, you'll be appointed to a depot. That depot will probably be Central, although if there were vacancies at other ETR depots, they may give you the option of starting there. If that did happen, it would be to a depot with a high vacancy/turnover rate, possibly Mortdale, North Sydney, it depends. Anyway, once you're appointed to a depot, you can't transfer out of there for a year, except on compassionate grounds or if there is a depot waiver at another depot. |
Also during your training you will be required to go to all sectors and starting at all different times. For example you could be starting a shift at Mortdale at 2.25am on the Illawara and the only other locations that you can start at generally on there is Cronulla and Waterfall. This is sector 1. Sector 3 you could be starting at Penrith, Blacktown, Richmond, North Sydney and Hornsby Sector 2 it could be Campbelltown, Flemington CS, Liverpool and I think Central is included in this one.
They will only give you a taxi from Berowa to the location and back again. They will allocate you a driver trainer that they have available like someone in my class lived in Wollongong and they had to start at 0348 at Blacktown. During your training you have to go to all sector no buts as you wont complete the course.
I have been told that it will take quite a while to get on the intercities. As a few in my class would like to do so.

Haha, I think all you trainees will be sick of Burwood in the end. I was there for one day yesterday and was sick of it! I think all you drivers were sick of waiting for the lift aswell!
About Intericty it does take a while, my uncle has been waiting for ages (about 8yrs) to get to Gosford.
Hope this helps.

Its not too bad mate Hey those lifts are beautiful hey! especially number 1 lift. Its like standing on the end of a turntable when a heavy loco steps on.

Hey Guys,
Cheers for the welcome.
Really looking forward to it in any case, even if I do have to commute for a years. Had my last shift at my old job last night, it was a good job, but had been there for 10.5 years so it was time for a change.
Always wanted to be on the trains, so this is a fantastic opportunity & I had to jump at it!
Only 5 days till start date now!
Al.

Hi guys,
Im currently about to start the hsc exams and am looking to be a Guard for Cityrail. I have read all the pages in this thread and it seems like its a long journey but worth it in the end? What are the questions asked in the phone interview? Im living in Wollongong, so how would I go about applying for the traineeship?

Hello boys (and girls??),
First time, first post.
This site is interesting... So much to learn.
Hope you're all well.
I've been to the cat1 medical for the trainee train driver yesterday. Not made females around... Hrm.. So yea, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Hello Taggy.
I've been a station staff for about a year now and you know what, it's awesome You'll come across a lot of delinquents on the train and at the station - being a public facility. But that's a day in our office, and it's very rewarding when even just one person thanks/commends you for something.
I've also met a lot of gurads and drivers since I've started, I was trained at a major depot, and they all love their jobs. A lot of the guards and drivers have been in those roles for more than 10 years. And if you're not happy with being a guard, you can always move up or across Cityrail. So many jobs out there... Good luck!

I forgot to answer the rest of your questions, sorry.
I don't recall getting a phone interview when I went for the customer service role, nor when I applied for the trainee train driver. Just received an email regarding the info session and written assessment dates.
I remember getting a phone interview when I went for the trainee train planning role. And they asked about previous experiences, professional or personal, that would be relevant to the job I applied for. And I remember the lady asking about my Maths skills... that's probably where I flunked it, eh! Haha. Train planners write up timetables and special train notices so accuracy in numbers is paramount.
Also with traineeships, I think they have intakes twice a year? They advertise on the railcorp website. It's mostly trades, like Rail Traction and stuff, but when you're inside, you can apply for pretty much any job advertised internally.
I know this employee who made it as a guard at 18. He became a station duty manager at 22, and still loving it 10 years on.

Scary thing is, I think I may know the same person as you... Is this person based @ Mossvale out in the highlands by any chance?

Ahhh then I won't know him then, worth the try anyway...
Now... I patiently wait for RailCorp Recruitm'ts responce for my application for the CLK Casino Stn-based Customer Attendant's position (theirs 2 on offer)... These days & with the way my current workplace is goin' it's apply for anything & everything... As much as Casino is only a small town of 12 - 15'000, it's a foot in the door & I can always transfer back to Syd. later if a position became available...
