Why are they called porters? When I hear that job title, I think of the guys who help you to carry your bags. Confused

Because that is *precisely* what they used to do... Razz The title has just lingered.

Yes; I am a bit surprised that QR are still using "Porter"
in the job title.

I am not to sure when NSW Railways let that "title" go.
In 1977 when I joined up, (PTC of NSW--then State Rail)
"Station Assistant" was already the title
(and now Customer Service Attendant--CSA)

and no more "Porter" ... like that Johnny Cash song. Laughing
"Hey Porter; Hey Porter......" ie actually train conductor.

I know Station Master-SM &
Assistant Station Master -ASM have been a long time reeling.
They did have a short stint as Station Managers,
then went back to Station Masters.

but now they are Official: Station Managers (SM) now
and Duty Officers (the old ASM's) ie Duty Shift Officers.
