Some wag in the signal box is having a bit of fun - 'L' plate in the window:

They did have 'P' plates up for a while - did the box get demoted when it shat itself the other day? Laughing

After the queens birthday shutdown, the Overland NR ran around for the first few days, unfortunately one of the the locos knocked over a signal in 2B road and the lower portion of the track was placed out of service, the signal was relocated and the track booked back in as of Yesterday.

In this day and age, how does a loco 'knock over a signal'? Especially if the same loco type had been running around it's train for a few days previously? Confused

I would have thought that there were extremely strict rules regarding distances and placement of signals.

Now that all the trackwork at the north end of plats 1 / 2 / 3 has been re-arranged and the new interlocking commissioned bases have been poured for the extension of plat 2 at the Northern end by 70 - 90m .

Platform 8 was similarly extended at the Northern end, plus the provision of the new platform 8 South (C) under the Collins St overbridge . All this is part of the original scope of works for the new station to end up with the same total length of bg platform faces as the old Spencer St station had before the Southern Cross re-development .

In the process of re-building the station platform length was lost from the Southern ends of 1 (now half its original length), and 2 to 7 . The lost metres from these reductions at the Southern end has been made up by the addition of new platform 8 South (C), and extension of platforms 2 & 8 at the Northern ends.

Also included in the recent re-signalling works :

* Extension of 5a road at Southern end to provide a bg stabling road for one loco . Currently signalled but with a wooden baulk across the extension of 5a road .

* Extension of 2a road as dual gauge at the Southern end to provide loco stabling for one loco . Trackwork in place but not in use and not signalled.

* A new bg crossover midway along platform 4 between 4 and 4a roads and the removal of the catchpoints formerly in 4a at the Northern end.

This now allows platform 4 to be used as 2 Independent platform faces.
Also provides direct access from platform 4 Centre (A) to the Railmotor Depot via the centre crossover and 4b road . (The Railmotor Depot is now accessible directly from 4 Centre (A), 5 Centre(A) & North(B), 6 Centre(A) & North(B), and 7 Centre (A).

The following is the number of separate independent (trains can arrive and depart around each other )platform faces now available with the new interlocking :

Broad Gauge : Plat 1 (1); platforms 2 to 7 (each 2 faces); platform 8 has 3 faces . = 16 bg faces . (of which 3 are dg).
Standard Gauge : Plat 1 (1); platform 2 (2) = 3 sg faces (all are dg.)

Is the new interlocking 'slower' than the old one, are the signallers not taking full advantage of it, or was V/Line just being their usual slow self today?

I was on an up train about 9 am this morning, and we sat for 5 minutes under the Latrobe Street bridge waiting for a platform, at the 2 minute mark an A class and carset pushed back to the sidings, followed by a Y class and another carset. The train I was on was already 4 minutes late, so if we were on time we still wouldn't have had a platform to arrive onto. Confused

Noticed today that demolition has begun on the brick structure near the north end of PL 7/8, I think it was the former railmotor depot/meal room?

From what I know, you are looking at the destruction of the former Cars Office.
