So far its (estimated) cost to Railcorp is $124M and rising.
Now they want SOPA to house 20,000 in the Showgrounds and 2 halls for 2 weeks for free.

124 Mil just for Railcorp?

In fairness they're putting on a LOT of extra trains - heck check out the STN website and see how many of 'em bear 'wyd' in the title!
$126mill might be a bit of an exaggeration but it would be setting 'em back quite a bit. Still no more than any of a number of other major events that occur in Sydney though.

What choice do the government have? Can they make WYD go away? No. Could they have barred it to begin with? Maybe, but even if they could have, they would have copped flack for doing so. Given that the NSW government can't stop it, they have to make it work.
Consider the hoo-haa over the lack of transport arrangements when those ocean liners were here a year or so back. People flocked to the harbour to see 'em, there were no special trains or buses, chaos ensued. The government copped it big time from the media. The next time the ships came back there was an STN and lots of extra trains. For big ships. No one said boo about the cost.
The government have to do the best they can to move people around for this WYD thing. The outcry if they did nothing would be much, much worse than the minor bitching about the disruption and cost we hear now. We had that before the Olympics too. If they pull this off and WYD goes smoothly, it'll be a much needed good news story for RailCorp, the state government and Sydney in general.
People can throw big numbers around all they like. They don't mean much without source info, they could be real or made up, who knows. Whatever the up front cost, RailCorp will likely recover a third or a half or whatever their cost recovery level from fares.
Anyway, it's going ahead so we have to make the best of it and hope it goes smoothly.

Comparing the importance of ANZAC DAY to a get together of the international society of kiddy fiddlers, lead by an ex member of the Hitler Youth is an insult to all the Diggers who fought for this country. It's because of the sacrifices these Diggers made that all you brainwashed crackpots can have your little shindigs to annoy the rest of us sane people who don't worship imaginery beings.

Not a catholic at all. What about you? You seem to have a bone to pick with the catholic church which apparently doesn't extend to football, the olympics, the mardis gras, NYE fireworks or cruise ships.
I also find your description of ANY event, with the possible exception of a kiddy fiddlers anonymous meeting, as "a get together of the international society of kiddy fiddlers" as exceedingly offensive - I'm sure you are aware that kiddy fiddling is not sanctioned by the church, and it is only a small minority that drag the whole lot down (like most groups in society). At last check, most that make exceedingly offensive statements (and then back them up with comments like "the rest of this poxy site is bad enough") ARE TROLLS.
Now if you want to discuss WYD, the transport arrangement for WYD, or even kiddie fiddling within the church, AND have some FACTS, AND are willing to discuss it as a mature adult, then you are welcome to do so here. If you just want to insult RP, it's members and the catholic church without any actual basis for your claims, then my graphic stands.

No I hate all that rubbish aswell, ANZAC DAY on the other hand is a sacred day which every Australian who enjoys the freedom that Diggers fought for should respect. To compare it with a visit by some silly old religious git who was once a member of the Hitler Youth is just plain disrespectful to those who died for this country.

Ze Pope was also drafted into the German military three times, lastly into the infantry. His unit never saw combat, but if you want to go on a "yay for the ANZACs" jolt, you might remember that the man is a former enemy combatant (at least potentially). I think "the diggers" have generally forgiven those they faced off against in wartime, and would now quite happily raise a glass with them. It's not like joining the Hitler Youth, or the army, were optional and I think it's generally accepted that young Ratzinger wasn't any more of a Nazi than was prudent to survival at that time.
The Catholics wouldn't have made the guy Pope if he was a happy little Hitlerite. I suppose too that a lot of "the diggers" were of Catholic faith, and fought for their commonwealth and country in spite of the fact that they were often on the wrong end of sectarian discrimination from the protestant ruling classes.
Basically, don't be a wuss and hide your prejudices behind "the diggers", if you're anti Catholic, anit Pope or anti Christian, come right out and say so.

I am anti Catholic, anti Pope and anti Christian and I have to agree with all that are saying the government/s should not be spending public money on some old religious git, as he has been called. I take offence at the public purse of any state being used to do this, when each state has things that are crying out to be fixed etc, that money spent on this could be better spent on child welfare or something as has been seen lately in the news they need the money to provide services. What a load of religious Crrrrrrrrap!

Can we at least accept that WYD has meant a lot of people, most from out of town, have to be moved around Sydney - probably more people that Anzac day brings, certainly more than a footy game does. Religious or not, the govt has always seen it as their role to move people around Sydney.
Doesn't matter how sacred the reason, how silly, how religious, illegal, immoral, or crazy, the people need to be moved. That's what has happenned.
