Derailed: Train operator pulls out of Tasmania

Pacific National is to pull out of Tasmania. (www.pacificnational.com.au )

The company which own Tasmania's freight trains is pulling out of the state.

Pacific National is to sell its rolling stock.

The Minister for Infrastructure Graeme Sturges told State Parliament today Pacific National is selling its Tasmanian operations.

The Opposition's Peter Gutwein says the Minister is not across his portfolio and Mr Sturges says the government will do all it can to facilitate a sale.

He says other companies had notified the government of their interest in the rolling stock and he says the government is committed to rail freight services in Tasmania.

Now, this is interesting. Will QRN/ARG, what ever they are, take up the opportunity to have trains operating here in Tasmania?

Also, with PN pulling out, who takes over East Tamar workshops? I wonder what the price tag will be.

Lastly, is this good bye to the belovered English Electric locomotives?

A Lot of things need to change for a new rail operator to be successful.
I suggest that those who can have a look at the Australian Railways Association submission to the Federal Government on Greenhouse at the following link. http://www.ara.net.au/dbdoc/Garnaut%20Climate%20Change%20Review%20-%20ARA%20Submission.pdf
Some or part of their submission if implemented would certainly help.

Hmm, the El Zorro livery looks good on the Z loco chief. The QRN colours however Spew

Another 2 possible candidates would be Genesee & Wyoming Australia Pty Ltd (currently have narrow gauge in SA) & Coote Industrial Rail Division (ex South Spur and operate many EE units on SG & NG in WA)
The livery of GWA is the Orange with black stripes & the CIRD livery is all over deep green with yellow ends

PN to withdraw from Tasmania

That is the best news I have heard all day, they should have never gotten in in the first place.

I don't think El Zorro will go after it they are already turning away business in Victoria. Genesee & Wyoming or QR National are a maybe, I don't know much about Coote Industrial to talk for them.

With PNT and FreightLink now both up for sale following financial problems, one must ask is this the start of a "Two National Operator" Australian rail system.

This is also the possibility of a Europe or US operator buying PNT

Is it correct to assume this means ALL operations in the state, including west coast ore trains and Railton-D'port cement shuttle?

What of the Melba Line track itself? Would it be desirable for the Tas Govt to annex this to the remainder of the network? same for maintenance facilities at ETJ and Burnie??

Cheers

I'm wondering that myself. I suppose, PN are selling everything, that does include the Melba line as well.

I really wonder what the final price would be.

I agree that El Zorro are probably very last last on the list of potential contenders and least likely, due to their lack of a record, little capability and few capital assets, far more so than IRA. I would have also written off G&W, but since their suprise capture of the Great Northern in Queensland, I wouldn't now be quite so quick to count them out. I still reckon that based on the interest shown in the submissions to the Tas. access review, the leading contenders would have to be QRN and Coote Industrial. I can't wait to see the outcome.

I think you will find South Spur Rail is still the rail operating company at this stage even though the locos have the parent company logos on them.

The poster claiming GWA has captured the North Qld traffic is confusing GWA and ARG. The WA operations ARG was purchased from GWA & Westfarmers by QR so it is really a subsidiary OF QR. GWA now only operates the Sth Australian rump of ARG and has nothing to do with QR. I doubt if GWA would be interested in TR as they would really like to exit the Sth Australian operation according to some sources.

Cheers
