Anyway, I decided to use PT to go to work this morning.

From Glen Waverley, I got off at Gardiner to swap to a 72 tram along Malvern Road.

Weird thing was when we got to Glenferrie Rd, we stopped for several minutes. Then the driver got out, changed points and we did a left turn (now heading south) into Glenferrie Rd as the driver announced something unintelligible. Just up a little bit was another tram parked (pointing north) waiting for us (no pax on it). Parked side by side, with both tram's right hand doors open, we all dutifully migrated from tram 114 to tram 191. The new tram headed north along Glenferrie Rd, left back into Malvern/Commercial Rd and we were back on our way. There didn't seem to be anything awry with 114 so I've no idea what the issue was. Anyway, something a bit different.

Because the ticketing machine ran out of change?

Hmm, could be a tram change (then again, both routes are operated by Malvern) - though could be for other reasons.

Some tram malfunction - hence on Glenferrie to return to Malvern Depot. A number of things can go wrong, which doesn't necessary mean its obvious to the passengers in the saloon.

Could have ran out of sand, traction equipment issues, aircon/heater not working, graffiti, ticketing malfunctions (ie PIM key screwed, validators bunk)...

The only issue being the starter might have been notified a bit late, otherwise h/she could have prepared the change-over tram earlier so that they would meet at Glenferrie & Malvern Rds. to minimize delay.

That seems like a pretty smooth tram change. At least they lined up the doors and didn't make you cross the road.

Melbourne Trains and Trams will be moving to a new home in SWEDEN as of the 15th of August 2008. It's only for 8 months though!
Updates coming by the 7th of August with new pics from around Melbourne.

Yeah, I was pretty impressed by the changeover. It only took a couple of minutes to effect the transition.

It would have been quicker except a smeggy little schoolkid left his bag in the centre stairwell and jammed the door!
