in the Buloke times Tuesday June 17 it has on the front page about a steam train coming to Wychepoof on October 10,

i live near by but also go to uni at Bendigo, will the train go via Bridgewater or Dunolly

the article in the paper sounds like a big event celebrating 125 years of rail in Wycheproof,

i just wished it would go up to Berriwillock, closer to home for me

Seems as Though stuff like this is making headlines everywhere at this moment. Last week we had two major articles in the local rag about special trains to Camperdown and Warrnambool.

If its Wycherproof, then you orta take a look at LowndesJ515's photos of the first El Zorro Grain to Wychy, or Rocket's photographs of the Wycherproof Station building ... If you think Tocumwal is bad, .... wait until you see ... its a tumbledown, fall down disgrace, the station buidling.

IIRC last time they went to wycheproof (Feb 2007 IIRC) they had permission to use the ground level steps in the K cars to unload people into the main street. I wonder if a similar thing would be allowed in 2008.

Hope to have a Brochure from the charterer by the end of the month for this tour. It will be something else from all other tours run up that way!

Looks like what ever Wychie's Version of Wang's: The North Eastern is, will see more trade over a 24Hr period in this tiny town, then what it would normally in a week, let alone a month... Embarassed Razz Twisted Evil

i email the Wyche resouce center and got back this

Thank you for your email and in response to your question the train
will come via Ballarat.
We will keep you informed about the steam train visit and can email
you the program which will be ready end of July. Regular updates will
be on the website soon.

I am going through Wyche tomorrow following the Kulwin line all the way from Bendigo that i ahve not allready seen

I am aiming to try and complete having been at every station on the line from North Bendigo, except Marong, Derby, Kurting, Glenalbyn (all of which are not intact) and north of Sea Lake.

of the stations still intact there is only Eaglehawk, Bridgewater, Inglewood, Wycheproof, Berriwillock and Sea Lake that has there platforms still intact that I have seen.

I remember about 10 years ago a steam train came all the way to sea lake stopping at Berriwillock because I saw it there, I wish it would do that again if it has 24 hours in Wycheproof,

will the train stop any where between Melbourne and Wycheproof does anyone know like say Maryborough or Inglewood if you were coming form Bendigo for example because that would be easier than having to travel to melbounre to catch the train

The train you're thinking of is the Kulwin weekender in August 1998. It was R761 with a train of sleeping cars. It was so full that they even had people booked into the open saloon bit at the end of the wooden sleepers!

Unfortunately you will never see a trip like that again thanks to the way our society has gone downhill in the last 10 years (paranoia about safety, insurance issues, very inflexible operators, etc...).

That trip was a brilliant way to spend a weekend. We left Melbourne on the Friday night with quite a fast run to Bendigo, before continuing on to Wycheproof in time for breakfast.

After breakfast, we had a photostop in the main street before heading north. All through the day there were set back and walk foward photostops right along the line in perfect weather conditions.

Arrival in Kulwin was mid afternoon, where R761 proceeded to the buffers at the end of the line for the obligatory photo, before heading back to Sea Lake in time for dinner at a local pub (along with another two photostops).

Of course, even if you could run a train to Kulwin, you probably wouldn't be allowed out of the train in this day and age of public liability rubbish as there's no platform. Rolling Eyes

After departing in the early hours of the morning, we once again arrived at Wycheproof for breakfast. Following the departure from here, we headed south through Inglewood and then across to Dunolly, Maryborugh, Ballarat, Geelong and Melbourne. Again there were photostops all day.

These are the sort of trips we used to have. People got out for photostops in all sorts of locations. We climbed through fences, up embankments, etc... At destinations without platforms, it wasn't a big deal. We simply got out onto the ground. I remember back in 1988 on the weekender up to Albury before the 38 parallel run the next day, they dumped us in the yards at the northern end of the station! Nobody got hurt in the many years these sort of trips were run.

The sad thing is, I'm 27 and I already sound like an old fart. That shows you how backwards and restrictive our society has become in just the last 5 years. It's hard to believe that as recently as 2004 we had tours with photostops (the ARE Boort trip in April 04 was the last one IIRC).

I was at Whycheproof at Easter, and the turntable didn't look usable to me, and there were saplings growing on the track leading to the table. Does anybody know its status, and whether a loco will be able to be turned? Or will this trip run top-and-tail with a diesel?

the last time I was in wychieproof (feb 2007 double headed S class) the turntable did look a bit undesirable and ontop of that limb's from trees were growing across the road leading to the turntable wich would of blocked it way as well.

Hi there

I was one of those booked into the open saloon end on this trip.

The evening in the Sea Lake pub was great, even got free drinks towards the end of the night as the publican didn't have anywhere to put any more money. (At least that is what he said)

Woke up on Sunday morning with a local Sea Lake cat asleep on me, who got into the train during the night.

Cheers
Lance

PS: A bit of tourist info for your (what will probably be brief) stay at Kulwin, there are public toilets adjacent to the tennis courts, not sure what condition they are in these days Confused
