Tonight at Muswellbrook a empty coal train came to a stop hauled by PL5, 3, 2 and 48143. They headed out on the Ulan line. And the wagons were the same used on Pelton Runs. Sorry I don't have any photos cause I only filmed it.
This is the first time I have seen this service run up here, have never seen PL's before run through Muswellbrook, and am lost for words like is this a new service or did I just film a rare working?
But great to see an all Alco hauled coalie .

I can only suspect that they went out to Bengalla and loaded due to problems at Austar resulting in the diversion of the train. Happens every now and then when a mine has some kind of failure and they can't load. Saves running am empty train back to Port.
I'm not aware of any new branchline workings up Ulan way. Besides, it's all heavy gauge track to Ulan, why would they need such light-footed loco's?
SMR30 was that you I saw at Maitland a few weeks back on the Suburban platforms when did a crew change on an Up Coalie there on the coal roads? About 3-4 pm?
EDIT: Well, tonight I worked one of these trains. Consist was PL2, 48143, 8141 (as 3rd unit ), and 40-odd NHTF's bound for Bengalla for loading with domestic coal for the power station at Eararing. I dunno why they are using lightweight trains, but there it is...

I was there last week waiting for the Radio Test Train, so may not have been me if it was before.
So well thanks for the info KRviator, looks like I filmed a rare working then.
Cheers from Paul

The PL's were rostered up for the job. Only needed to rail out 2000t of Bengalla coal to fill the quota and it was a spare Unit. Saves running a big train up to the mine and only half filling it.

Yeah cool, sorry I and a few mates just call it the Ulan line in general so thinks for the info to.
I herd this rumbel through Singo think it was just some 48's on a grain tarin so I sent to Ravensworth to first film it but no matter what setting my camera was bluring alot but was amazed to see the PL's and well since I got a smeg shot there I went to Muswellbrook and they had to stop for the Hut as the blue light on top of it was flashing.
Even though they were PL's except for 48143 it was awesome hearing them work towards the station with the deep alco chug and it was almost like being back in the SRA days when 4x48's would be used on Northern Coal Trains.

Pacnat are only running 1 consist to Pelton on an irregular basis at the moment and to make use of the second rake of wagons. The set is usually built up to 55 wagons and runs between Bengalla and Vales Point.
The motive power seems to vary alot but the most common combo's seem to be a 3000hp unit (81or82) with 2 or 3 48/PL units.
The use of 4 x 48/PL's is quite unusual

Can confirm, sighted 8227/PL2/48120/48134 at East Maitland at 1321 (loaded, using the main) and again at Dora Creek at 1638 (mt) bound for Broadmeadow.

The supply mine at Newstan is closing. Coal is coming from other mines up the Valley like Bengalla, Mt Thorley and Mt Owen.
Not 100% but I think Interail ran their last train from Newstan to Vales last week.

Ran as MO151 then VP490 to Vales, then PW49 back to Port Waratah.
