Well, let's just hope the Liberals don't win the next election, because they'll cancel the whole lot and make us all use buses again...
The devil's in the detail, of course, but this is at least a plan to move forward. High-speed link to Bunbury? Surely not unless they lay a new line...

I feel that there isnt a great deal of substance or vision to this anouncement. Most of it is ideas that have already been mooted for the past 5+ years.
My main issue is this.
The Transport minister 2 weeks ago was encouraging councils to develop more medium and high density living in order to stop the urban sprawl of Perth.
Then on Friday ABC radio interviewed a guy from Monash Uni who had just crunched the basic numbers and come up with Perth's population reaching 2.3 million People by just 2021. Granted this is based on the imigration figures due to the mining boom which will all know is undetermined as to how long it will actually last.
For me, this means that unless we want major traffic congestion in 10 years or so, then the above anouncement will not cut the mustard.
Just my Thoughts.

I just hope that when these railway lines are built, that the goverment places a plaque at the offical openings with the wording:
"BUILT WITH THE MONEY FROM THE RESOURCE INDUSTRY OF THIS STATE"
Reason.......because bugger all of the state and federal royalties from the Nor' West ever seem to get back to the area's from where it is earned, but Perth sure seems to be getting more than it's fair share of all the resource earned monies.

Would you like a ferris wheel? Maybe the govt can buy them in bulk. 
Hey, Perth can whinge just as much as you guys up north, because the feds rip us off just as much.
At least a lot of people who work in the north are based in Perth and so is the mining companies' infrastructure. I'm sure those companies are just as hard lobbying for money to be spent in Perth, not just the north.

Also, when I was watching the news updates this morning on Seven, The plan to extend Clarkson to Yanchep, Midland to Ellenbrook, and Armadale to byford, would likely to happen within the next 7 years.
But good ol Carps won't reveal the cards until after the state election

Well no, but then no political party would. Get the soundbytes in now, and get people excited...
At least it's far more of a vision than what we've had of the opposition.
(I know, I know, let's keep politics out of it, but it's hard to, when one party does have a vision for rail transport, and somewhat of a record of delivering on it.)

Could that proposal for north east transport be light rail?
The Subiaco to Burswood line seems to be rather quiet at present, but maybe they'll soon announce they're going ahead with it, and perhaps a line to the north east?
I don't know Perth all that well, but are they talking about the Dianella area?

I am with you Controller anywhere north of Perth does not exist, Perth would be screaming if the feds gave the same percentage out to Perth as it (the State) gives to the regions.
We are expected to feel grateful when they spend $$ on some infrastructure problems in the Country yet its normally as a last resort when they have to do something its because its stuffed. I am even thinking of things like hospitals like in Gero, old one was costing them over a million bucks a year just to maintain and cost was rising each year so they had to do something, only problem was it had less beds even though the old hospital was at capacity.
Over 200+ road trains use the Brand Highway south of Gero a day, and we get 4 or 5 passing lanes in 400kms.

It sounds like a light rail proposal, yes.
They'd either go to Dianella (going up Alexander Drive) or, possibly a bit more likely due to the amount of shops and businesses along the way, up Beaufort St. to Bayswater/Morley's bus hub. Given the entertainment area in Mt Lawley along there would be a good choice for light rail for people to visit the area all times of the day...

Not too sure that will work too well. Tonkin Hwy was not designed with as much leeway in mind as the Freeway. The Walter Rd East/Broun Ave bridge would have to be extended, and the Morley Drive intersection is a totally different proposition. Also, in that whole area, the houses are very close to the side of the highway, pushing everything out to accomodate two tracks is unlikely to work (have a look on Google Maps for a satellite view).
I'd see it more likely to be split off around Lord St or Guildford area.
However, if this then becomes a branch service like Thornlie (ie. Perth to Ellenbrook), it would kill the idea of also running a branch service out to the airport from the Midland Line. Midland Line's inner section simply could not cope with the amount of trains required to service three destinations.
Which again leaves us with the proposition of making the airport line a section of a new circle route (Midland - Airport - Thornlie - Murdoch/Cockburn - Fremantle).
If people can access the airport line without having to come through the city if it's a Midland branch service (eg. passengers from Armadale having to come all the way into the city to transfer onto a service for the airport, rather than being able to transfer around Thornlie) I think it'll make it much more attractive to use.
