I know there is a thread in the Model Railway section, but, i would like to say here, congrats to the Tasmanian Rail Modellers, on the fine layout thats East Tamar. The detail is excellent, even the weathered of the locos, are great.

I still remember my first look at Glenrose all those years ago at Railex, at Evendale, my jaw just dropped at the sight of something thats Tasmanian.
At the time, the paper train was running with the ZP/ZR combo, the same train on the layout on Glenrose as well.

Be great if you guys, on your spare time, make a few locos and sell them!

Anyway, great layout. Hopefully one day i get the chance to see (and photography) this layout soon in the future.

I agree with you there Damo, a pat on the back to the guys responsible for East tamar (and Glenrose), its a sterling effort, though I dont know if I've ever seen X's being serviced in the ETJ quickfix! Razz

Perhaps X4 has, in the days when DRR had trips in and out of Lonny before the Inveresk shed was built.

She sure does boys!

Can't wait to she it in the flesh again, i seen the layout on its first outing and it seems to have improved vastly since then!

All due credit must go The Tasmanian Rail Modellers.

"What spare time?" is the answer to that

The layout will be on display at the exhibition held at the Hobart show grounds on the weekend of 23/24 August 2008

All,
I'll add my note of appreciation for the work the Tasmanian Rail Modellers - most spectacular! That must be one of the biggest collection of scratchbuilt diesels anywhere, regardless of prototype, and they all look excellent.

Speaking of the locos - a couple of questions. Are all the locos scratchbuilt? I was wondering about the 830s in particular. Also, I wonder if AMRM has put the hard word on any of the modellers involved for some more detail on the techniques used to buld the locos? I'd sure love to see that! That's a hint, Stuart!

I have a vested interest of course - as someone who is finding the old TGR/early AN period exerting some strange fascination, I'd like a sense of the degree of difficulty. Maybe one day I'll have a crack at one or two myself - although probably on 12mm gauge track.

The Alco's are indeed scratchbuilt to 4mm scale.

AMRM have not put the hard word on us yet......

Steve,
Well, if AMRM hasn't put the hard word on you, can I trouble you for a couple of techniques that you use?

I'm especially interested to know how you handle the curves on the long hoods, particularly the compound curves of say a Y class. Do you just start with sheet styrene, and then scrape or file to shape, or do you use formers and bend thinner sheet over them. How do you handle the compound curves where two planes meet? Are these just carefully filed/sanded to shape?

The other thing I've wondered about is the louvres on say an X or V class. How do you manage to get convincing louvres on the models?

Hope you don't mind me asking!

A

A,

The compund curves on the longhood of the Y are not the easiest to do.

Y1, my first Y long hood end is not as rounded as it should be (this loco is now 14 years old), DV 1's (2 years old) is much better and my latest 2151 (built this year) is my best effort to date.

What I do is build up the basic shape with laminations of styrene and then sand it to shape. Takes a bit of time and patience but looking at 2151 it is well worth the effort. I may re-do Y1 if I get the urge.

Mike is the builder of the X's and the V's (which are Bachmann 04's).

For my loco louvre's I use Evergreen clapboard (size escapes me at the moment). They are cut out individually and either recessed into the body or filed down on a piece of sandpaper to reduce their thickness and glued on to the body.

I am always on the lookout for something a bit better but the clapboard does the job. The louvre's are a pain (much worse in my book that doing the long hood of a Y) and I would love to see any new locos that may come to the state have no louvres at all!!

Hope this helps and it is no trouble at all!

Oh 2151, was wondering the other named loco would be built Steve.
It would be interesting if you guys did do a "How to Build" in AMRM or even that model section on the railtasmania site.

Love to give the scratch build thing a crack one day, if i have the patients Laughing

That sounds a bit too much lie modelling, and as a long time reader it seems to me that AMRM has an aversion to such articles

Doing something like this for the web-site is on the agenda, but behind, life, family, TRN, exhibitions, having a break etc etc etc
