The high level photo shoot was organised and carried out at Broadmeadow loco's No 1 shed, by the late Ron Preston. A poster of this lineup was available some time ago.
I'm all in favour of progress; it's change I don't like.

From my time as a chargeman at Delec, pre the green diesels, but non the less, all of the locomotives were in a pool, & were on diagram rosters that began at the start of the cycle & then finished at the end, any locomotive could be swapped in or out of that roster. When foriegn depot engines were used, they were taken out as soon as a local one was sourced.
Thus if the green engines were part of this operation & it continued the same principle would aplly. So, what I am saying is simply this, I constantly saw a green 49class at Clyde, & a 73 in Sydney Yard, so were there only 2?
The situation being simple, unless on restricted use, I would not imagine any engine that was able to be used on sort of traffic being restricted to yard precincts, or set rosters. The only obstacle to that would be to prevent them being rostered on workings that could have the potential for drivers rostered that were not qualified for them.
At Delec when the 49's first came onto their allotment, it meant there was a huge job to qualify all the drivers for them. The same would apply to any other depot that had them working into.
4201, was fitted with the in cab controlled marker lights, but I also understand that other cab modifications were also carried out to allow it to be used as a leading unit, this icluded I understand long needed sound proofing. |

There were 3 x 49 class locos in the green livery - 4901, 4902 & 4905 - reported by the June 2008 AMRM at page 41.

There was an X*** shunter in the same colours, might've been X101? |
Two of the green 49 class - 4902 & 4905 - ended up in Victoria, which explains why people in Sydney might have missed seeing them.

If anyone wants up-to-date and accurate information about the 49 class, then I suggest they refer to the June 2008 issue of the "Australian Model Railway Magazine", where the Editor, Ian Dunn, at pp40-44, provides details of colour schemes, current ownership of locomotives and a general overview of the 49 class locomotives.

I thought the original topic was 4 specific 49 class locos rusting away at Casino, that AREN'T a part of the current "auction".
I can't believe I'm promoting one of Roy's threads, but this would seem to be the appropriate thread for auction news. No news in it though. I assume when the process is finished if not Railcorp then certainly some of the "winners" will be proudly boasting their new aquisitions. The fact that that hasn't happenned yet suggests the decisions haven't been finalised yet.
