At least an 80 doesn't leak as much water through the windscreen's like the 81's. When I was working in NSW, I was surprised that the crews put up with the water leaking into the cabin and were not banned from leading in wet weather. It's not a new problem from what I was told.

Its not a problem that has been fixed either.

Just out of curiosity, how many 81s have YOU worked? There's plenty of blokes would work just about anything over an 81.

How long have you been employed as a TO, a week? Are you even qualified yet?

Thats a bit harsh, even though he may only be new to the job.
But atleast I bet you he could grab the right staff when required. Twisted Evil
There is no need to get stuck into people here.

hahaha u ask any ira employee and they would say give me an 81 anyday. same thing went for when i use to work at silverton. I love how all these foamers groan and complain about not seeing a variety but truth be told half the locos u see running around arnt fit to be running.

Then again i guess every loco has there problems. 80s and there smoky cabins etc.

No mate I'm not qualified as a L11 yet. However from my (as you rightly point out) minimal experience I would prefer to take an 81 over an 80. Several of the other blokes at the depot have also said much the same thing.

Pacific National is a business with money to be earnt and peoples wages to be paid, and they do a pretty decent job at it. Try ripping the 81's off the lead engine of a consist for an 80 and most crews plus the RTBU will rip ya to f*ckin shreads.

Before you go shooting your mouth off about "as if we don't see enough 81's" maybe you should consider my above points. We don't run trains to satisfy your gunzelling needs, we run trains with particular locomotives to get coal/wheat/freight from A to B. Be it whatever motive power PN has available at the time, the resource co-ordinators don't take into account the gunzels. Nor shoud they.

Very good point there, IRA also do the same with the top priority to have a MZ leading over a 44.
