Rather surprised there is no mention of this already.

Trainz Simulator 2009 ('Railroad' has been omitted) is targetted to be released before the end of the year. Graphics wise, it is a huge advance on TRS2006, with locomotives, stations and tracks getting a substantial improvement (Surrounding scenery it appears has had no improvement). Other features include working with 5m x 5m squares rather than the old 10m x 10m, and AI drivers that might actually have some common sense!

Comparison of SD40 locomotives (Taken directly from the Official site). On the left is the TRS2006 version, on the right the TS2009.

There are more screenshots available, including the new default track, comparison of diesel control stands, and the old and new 'Station A4'.

I'm in two minds about getting it myself. Sure it looks flashy, but that's just a limited range of default content. Using 3rd party locomotives and rollingstock (for which I am deeply grateful so much is available, particularly with VR and NSWGR), it would appear to offer little above what TRS2006 gave me (until it stopped working for some reason Evil or Very Mad )

People seem to not like actually reading the information provided... TS2009 world builder edition (WBE) is just the bare basic game with some example assets to get creators started with. It includes all the TRS2006/7 (2007 was a European version with SP1 and some added content) content, plus a hand full of new items to get people started with.

The new station doesn't replace the 'station A4', as it has an island platform. It's actually a model of Wallangarra station.

As for the locos above. The Santa Fe SD40-2 is from Trainz 1.0 if I remember right. The UP SD40-2 is the TS2009 version as stated.

There have been many improvements to the code, especially the game engine, to make things run better. The use of normal maps is increased, to help give more object 3D effects for less polys. The signalling updates from TC3 have been carried over, although many signals no longer work (Natvanders NSW signals don't work anymore Sad ). The have also been some changes to the lighting that have been carried over from TC1/2/3 (you can use a 'low beam' headlight). There have been huge improvements to the steam locomotive sounds and physics carried over from TC3.

Yep, it'll take a little while before there is a lot of 'TS2009' standard content. But it will look a hell of a lot better IMO.
