heard a interesting rumour the other day , apparently its a commonwealth law that a rail link to a major port cannot be removed so in case of war theres heavy transport available to be used.
i'd like to find out a bit more info but would'nt have a clue where to start.
might throw a spanner in the works if its true!

Darwin had rail to the port until the mid 1970s and then no rail service till 2003.
Never heard of that legislation before, then again South Australia didn't get of wartime rationing legislation until 2001 so it might be out there somewhere.

Swanston Dock in Melbourne gained a rail link in the 1960s and lost it at some point, not getting it back until the 2000s. The same thing happened to Appleton Dock just around the corner as well.
