I apologise if this is in another thread. I tried to search WYD08 (I remember seeing it) but kept getting nothing back

Meh. RailCorp might do this at any other time for any number of reasons, notably trackwork. They've even cancelled the Canberras and run the Melbourne via the Coast while they or ARTC dig up the track. A small diversion for the Big Pappa? Who cares?
I'm sure RailCorp management are doing it merely out of professional courtesy for a fellow infallible. They have to stick together, wot?

Most of us will be walking to Randwick Racecourse ... the only time I may catch a train is to and from the Airport. That's if I don't drive.

Why stuff up the rail network for this 
Trains don't go to Randwick anyway. Run normal rail services for the normal everyday worker/commuter/country passenger and sure extra buses will be needed to get to/from Randwick. Just need an old style Easter Show bus program between Eddy Avenue/Wynyard/Quay/Bondi to Randwick should cover it, if not exceed requirements.
This disruption is different to a diversion for trackwork. An unneeded disruption, IMHO.

IMHO, everything about this bloody WYD is a disruption to appease the minority. I'm all for religion and all that other rubbish, but as far as I'm concerned, religion should be left at your front door. By all means go to church on Sunday and pray at night, but why should my state fork up a hundred million dollars to support some Catholic event?
What happens if Islam want's to hold a World Youth Day here? Or the Rastafarians? Would they get the same treatment and support that the Catholics get? I don't think so.
What's good for the goose is good for the gander and if the gander wouldn't get the support then neither should the goose...

I fail to see how thousands of people spending money in Sydney will not help the local economy.
What have I spent on WYD costs thus far ... ?
- Airfares $350
- WYD Registration $175
- Deanery Registration $75
- Food $250
I do not have accomodation costs only because my Granparents live in Sydney.
What about creation of local job for extra security, volunteers, etc.
Granted, there will be a few disruptions during the event, but the benefits outweight the costs to the locals, I think.
Even the sex industry will benefit!

Guessing here that that is to do with a church fee of some sort too
Probably the only item that will have an impact on the Sydney economy.

Security will probably just be what already exists. Most would be NSW police removed from normal/general duties (another community disruption). Church probably have their own too. Volunteers don't get paid so hardly what I would call a job creation scheme.

But how do you know that? RailCorp seemingly want to free up some paths through Strathfield. They'll be doing that for a reason, I expect. East Hills is a better run into town anyway. Where's the problem?

Because a buttload of it's citizens are Catholic and it's a prestigious world event in it's own right.
I'm not a Catholic. You anti-religious morons, getting your knickers in a twist over WYD, still make me laugh. We have the disruption of the things like the Olympics, US presidential visits, the Royal family and APEC, not because the majority wanted them, but because we want to be a player on the world stage. This thing isn't a Sunday church service, it's a rock concert, only bigger. We change train schedules for rock concerts and sporting fixtures all the time, cancel some peak hour trains and put on extras to Olympic park. We'll do that for a band or the Wallabies, whose fans are waaaay smaller a minority than Catholics.

I don't think those groups are cohesive enough or have the numbers or the long history in our community. They're welcome to go through the same channels as the Catholics have and take their chances. That the Catholics can get this thing up is a pretty good indication that they deserve to have it.
Quit yer whining. We've put on beanos for stupider reasons (APEC) and they went fine. Good luck to the Catholics, have a good one. Don't make me break out Gunnery Sergeant Hartman.

Just because than can divert the Southern Services doesn't mean they should just do it because the pyjama wearing brigade are invading the City. They may as well have sent the Dubbo XPT and Broken Hill Xplorer via Bankstown while they are at it too
Strathfield is a connecting station between the Southern services and Northern services in times of delays. During trackwork when nothing is running then nothing is running. Trains are still running so this is different to a diversion for trackwork. An unneeded disruption.

Anyway, it's not the Pope who's disrupting services - he won't be using the train.
It's the thousands of faithful who will go to listen to a man who presides over one of the world's greatest collections of treasure, artworks etc, and preaches about selling all that you have and giving it to the poor ( Mark, chapter 10; vs 17-30.)

It's a major event. You don't have to like the cause but it's only proper for RailCorp to re-arrange it's services when there's an unusually large number or (fare paying) passengers to move to and from a major event. Royal Easter Show, rock concert, sporting event - same difference, only by all accounts WYD is bigger and longer. The Catholics are expected to buy mucho train tickets and use lots of public transport.
If I wanted to gee you up I'd mention that you're only complaining on behalf of those parasitic oxygen thieves who travel by CountryLink. Now there's a minority for ya! I'd do it but Riccardo might hug me or something.
