Note the rolls AH through to AL which have Tasmanian stuff inlcuding shots of the Tasman Ltd in its last years, and see the fairly decrepit state of Devonport and Hobart yards, but note the excellent condition of the EBR locos and stock. From the vantage point of today it is surprising to see such archaic goods wagons being maintained so well !
Also a shot of the Parattah railmotor taken at Hobart at ‘rush hour’. I note Les’s comment that he was saddened by the sense of decay. Suburban trains had ended more than a year prior, so it isn’t surprising no one much was at the station.
I remember this period. I was nine years old and used to nag my parents to call into Hobart station to see the equipment. It was an era of stasis, with quietly rusting steam locos and DPs lined up around Hobart’s turntable waiting for the scrap torch or for the preservation societies to come calling.
The Federal government had taken over in principle but operationally the system was still run by the state. It would be 1978 before the Feds assumed operational control.
