Hi everyone,

Some time ago I started a thread on level crossings on the Short North and Rolfe kindly posted some info from a Bulletin article showing level crossing locations and closure and bridge replacement dates.

I am hoping someone also has that sort of information for the Main North between Tenterfield and Wallangarra.

The reason I ask is that I am trying to pinpoint the location of what was the precursor to the road that is now the New England Highway.

Prior to 1946 the then Main Road crossed the railway line five times - one at the site of the current overbridge north of Sunnyside and at four level crossings.

Between 1946 and 1950 two road deviations were constructed to eliminate the four level crossings. The first deviation included the highway bridge over Tenterfield Creek so that is easy enough to work out the location of. The second deviation was north of the current overbridge but I can't see any obvious locations for a pair of level crossings that would still have the highway entering Jennings on the west side of the railway.

If anyone knows the mileage locations of the level crossings north of Tenterfield - e.g. from old track diagrams or weekly notices perhaps - I would be unbelieveably grafteful. I've exhausted all other options I can think of - old topo maps, aerial photos, the old parish maps.

Thanks in advance Smile

Gidday DRW,

Go to the 'Coals to Newcastle' (CTN) website

http://coalstonewcastle.railpage.org.au/

Click, History, Operational Information, scroll down till you see

'Northern Local Appendix - 1961' and download the file...

you will find the Level Crossing info for the section Glen Innes to Wallangarra on page 130 of 381.

Hope this helps....

Regards, Brian

Thanks Brian, that is just what I was after. It shows the locations of the two level crossings marked as Tenterfield-Wallangarra Road Very Happy

Thanks!
