Has anyone else seen the collecter magazine thing you can get at the newsagents now?
I saw it today and got the first issue. (which came with the brass cab etch)
Every week or month (not sure which) you get parts of a O scale DJH kit to build.
It dose end up being about $1400 all up in the end. But seeing as its over a long period of time its easy to save for.
Has anyone else seen this?

"Im a machinest, of course i can make that... but... what the hell is it??"

Whilst I have not seen it yet I do remember that there was a thread on here somewhere about this, one problem though too bad something happens to say part 15 of the magazine or something, you could be in dire straights to get past that point in the construction!

I used to work in a magazine distribution place and have just about seen every excuse for losing magazines! Cool

Nothing quite like non-powered kettle to get the punters worked up. The most interesting facet is the number of people who weren't modellers taking up the challenge and their reason's for doing so. People involved in the commercial side of the hobby should take note, there is a new world out there.

I am sure they are well past part 15 just using it as an example, when I worked at Gordon and Gotch years back one of our containers fell off, of a ship and was beyond recovery, we could not get replacement mags from Britian for them so what ever you were collecting that was in here you had a gap of one or two issues in your collection. Containers have also been involved in accidents here in Australia where the contents have been destroyed and cannot be replaced.

I would not like to get to a critical stage in the construction to find out this has happened, as you could be hard pressed to get the piece/s you need to get past this stage.

I do not like to be the bringer of doom, but as I said both of these have happened in the past, so it is quite possible that they could again. Cool

Read the fine print just a moment ago and the total cost was over $1800.
I hope the last issue doesn't go missing. Wink
Cheers

I am actually tempted to just get the first mag in this series, not to build the model (I haven't got a hope in hell, let alone having no tools etc to build it anyway!) but purely because it's $2 something, and you get the mag and the DVD...

Weird, I just saw the advert on Foxtel yesterday, twice, and it said First Issue only $1.50 (thanks for the exact figure!) and it's normally $14.95...? Confused

Do they supply a motor as one of the parts? Or do you have to motorise it yourself? It would be a shame to have it a static display for all that money Shocked

Series, or 'Part Works' as they are called in the trade, are notoriously fraught - for the customer, not the distributor - naturally!

Segments delivered out of sequence, not delivered at all, damaged in transit etc., etc., etc.
The fine print didn't even used to include how many 'parts' the series comprised of - and hence the 'total' cost.

And it's always more expensive than an equivalent product bought directly. Use a credit card and pay it off in a reasonable time, and you're still better off.

Then there's the 'bonus' or 'premium', or 'extra' parts - if it was a food chain they'd call it 'up-selling'. A phone company would call it 'maximizing your spend'. I'd just call it shady and disreputable.

I've been caught once too often, and the distributors in this case, having the largest share in an effective duopoly and about the worst customer relations in the known universe (yes folks - they even make connex look good) would be the last outfit I'd ever enter into a one way contract with.

Remember the Radio controlled WRX.......I do!

Jay.

Nope, I think the fine print along the bottom of the advert read like: Motor, pickups and track all extras (or not included?).

I think it did say the details are in the mag where to get the motor/pickups?

The kit is a standard DJH O scale product and costs 462 pounds to buy outright, that's about $960 currently, so you are being charged about $890 extra to buy it in parts, as the final price through the magazine is $1850.

Then you have to add the Motor/Gearbox for 100 pounds, and the wheels for 128.50 pounds, all up that is another $475 to find, and not supplied by the magazine.

Assuming you are silly enough to get all that together for a minimum of $2325.00, you have a brass and whitemetal kit that has to be soldered in order to assemble it, which most modellers these days claim they can't do.

If that does not ring alarm bells, then you deserve to be fleeced.

Hence why there's plenty of reason NOT to buy the full set, just the first mag... Wink

It really, REALLY doesn't add up, not at all. Unless you have wads of money and the time to build it and the optimism that none of the mags in the series will be lost/damaged...
