The usual arrangement with these type of part publication's is that the first part is real cheap, to sucker you in and from part 2 it sells for the normal price, in this case I think it is $14.95 an issue! Cool

David,

You must have missed S301's post which contains the words "issue two (the footplate) will be 8.95".

Also my reading of my issue one is that only issue one is available at newsagents. The rest comes in the mail when you effectively subscribe to it.

Nope. Got a phone call from the 'local' newsagent that issue two will be in on the 6th (I think) Smile

Although I'm not going any further (unless issue two were the rest of the cab Razz which it isn't).

This is a rough tranlation or near enough anyway,

The price is not that bad, as it is brass they are using for the parts and not some cheap smeg. If you are a real train fan would you really care that much about the price, $2,000 to build it, as some ready to run models of this loco can be this much!

Thats what he appears to be saying to me anyway! Cool

Thanks for the translation, David, at least now we've got a better idea of what was intended to be said... Wink

Still, yes, it is a brass model, but, realistically, who want to wait that long to have something running, and who'd want to put down that much folding stuff anyway? Confused Laughing

Don't forget the extra if you want it to run, I assume by this they mean a motor and gear box to go in it, one wonders how much extra this would be on top of the price for all the parts! Cool

Exactly, it's pretty costly not only on it's own, but you still have to add the motor etc etc to it...

Don't want to see the price tag for that lot! Laughing

If I were so inclined, I'd

1. Go to Hobbyco and buy a Bassett Lowke Scotsman.

2. Buy the RCTS "Locomotives of the LNER" Volume 2A

3. Forget about the part work and the "kit".

Since I am happy with my 1960s Trix OO Scotsman, My 1980s Hornby OO Scotsman and my 1990s Blue Hornby OO A3, and I already have the RCTS Part 2A, I'm not even slightly interested.

Thinking about it, I have five OO A4s, too......

If you want a locomotive to put on a mantelpiece, you might even get an Ace O gauge A4 for what you'd pay for the part work.

While it isn't an out and out confidence trick like the now famous Beijing Olympics ticket website, the promotors don't really expect many readers to end up with a museum quality model. I'd be surprised if more than five percent were ever fully assembled, let alone painted.

The RCTS book gives better and more accurate details of the LNER Pacifics (all of them, technical and historical) than most people could imagine.

I thought I would go along to the local newsagent and check this out for myself,as with many others I intended only to purchase the first magazine/DVD/part combo as it was listed on TV for only $1.50.
Much to my surprise no newsagent in my district has a copy,One did not even have it available on her order books..So builders beware..

Wombat31x your local newsagent probably has not got it in because their particular newsagency does not sell too many model type magazines and books, they can tell from their sales, if this is the case they will probably not take the chance of getting any in and just have it sit on the shelf, someone has to pay to get them and not many newsagents are that well off that they could afford to do this.

Newsagent will only get in what they think will sell, now if you get a dozen people who can go down to your newsagent and order it they may just do so. Also some newsagencies do not carry all the magazines that are availible at any one time, go to a large one and they will have everything, but smaller ones are more choosy because of less trade!

Years back newsagent used to be forced to take minimal amounts of magazines even if they could not sell them, they could be returned for a credit on their next order and so it went on. There was a lot of money tied up in this system and it was taken to court and broken, so now newsagents only order what they really want and nothing more, this makes their job a lot easier! Cool

I am a master of the "newsagent" kits...the bounty never got past issue5 kit total cost $1680 ... hobbyco cost around $800, daughter"s doll house kit totat cost apx $1200 ...hobbyco similar one around $400 it is obvious where i am going with this!..The other thing they dont tell you with these kits is the additional costs ie track, controler ,motor as stated in other replies but there are more additions to these also ...there is i think 151 issues at $15 bucks ea but when you get to the end suprise there is an additional 10 odd issues of "detail parts" and the real catch is that you have to open each issue also because they slip in additions/options and if you fail to do this (stored un-open) you miss out. The killer is when you miss an issue because this will leave you out of sequence and unable to continue construction....I HAVE BEEN THERE BE WARNED...note they have just started the gemstone/mineral collection again just maybe i will get to finish it this time ...heres not hopeing....M

I went and bought Issue 1 for $1.50 today to see what the fuss was about, as it comes with a Getting Started DVD.

Of note however, is quite a funny error I picked up, which has also been widely posted on the Pommy forums.

(Shot taken out of DVD)

Picked up issue 2 today and in this issue the cab is around the right way and the DVD is wrong of course. Plus on aside note the DVD mentions how the front has two holes that need filling in then make smaller holes, well the smaller holes are allready there. So there is no need to fill them in in the first place.

BTW: Each issue comes out fortnightly and not weekly.
