Wombat31x your local newsagent probably has not got it in because their particular newsagency does not sell too many model type magazines and books, they can tell from their sales, if this is the case they will probably not take the chance of getting any in and just have it sit on the shelf, someone has to pay to get them and not many newsagents are that well off that they could afford to do this.

The Newsagents I checked were my local, also Moura,Biloela and several in Rockhampton...All of whom stock modelling magazines.

Newsagent will only get in what they think will sell, now if you get a dozen people who can go down to your newsagent and order it they may just do so. Also some newsagencies do not carry all the magazines that are availible at any one time, go to a large one and they will have everything, but smaller ones are more choosy because of less trade!
Years back newsagent used to be forced to take minimal amounts of magazines even if they could not sell them, they could be returned for a credit on their next order and so it went on. There was a lot of money tied up in this system and it was taken to court and broken, so now newsagents only order what they really want and nothing more, this makes their job a lot easier! |
I'm fully in agreement David...
For the last 25 years I've lived in a well-known southern suburb of Brisbane with a major shopping centre - when I first moved there I was astonished just how many railway magazines that the local newsagent had on his shelves - around 25-28 separate titles - this covered both model and prototype magazines and covered British, American and Australian magazines - over the years as I travelled all over Brisbane, I discovered that this particular newsagent held the largest stock of any railway magazines in Brisbane.
However, over the last twenty years or so, our area has been literally 'taken over' by Asian cultures - 25 years ago there was NO Asian writing on ANY shops - today literally EVERY shop has Asian writing, all the local shopping centres are now fully Asian owned, and most of the shop tenancies (even well known franchises) are now run and staffed by Asians.
The downside of this is, about 5-6 years ago, my local Aussie newsagent decided to retire, and sold his shop to an Asian. Since then there has been a steady DECLINE in the stocking of railway magazines - at present the level is around 10-12 different titles, and he has halved the quantities (the old newsagent usually got around 6-10 copies) to only 2 or 3 for most magazines and only 5 copies for the most popular. I'm quite friendly with the new Asian newagent, and he knows I'm one of the regular buyers, but he quite clearly told me some time back "I'm in this to make money - if a magazine does not sell in sufficient quantities, I will have no hesitation in dropping it from my buying list".
Where the real problem here lies - Asian people in general are just NOT interested in railways, so the potential buyers market for railway magazines has shrunken quite severely, but in spite of this, this newsagency is STILL the largest stockist of railway magazines in southern Brisbane.

When I went to high-school years ago, use to always drop by the local newsagent both at the St Marys shopping centre and the main street for all my railway magazines, and both would have a wide selection of them exceeding 15, but with the limited cash I had back then, I'd rotate between getting RD, AMRM, MP or MR, but nonetheless, all of them were there for me to choose from.
Over the years, both newsagents have been bought out by Vietnamese families, both spending quite abit of capital refurbishing the store, and both unfortunately downsizing alot of the magazine titles on the shelves to the extent there are less than 4 railway titles on the shelf a month, usually Motive Power, and the rest being Pommy steam/modelling magazines and nothing else!
I frequented the Main Street newsagent more than the one at the shopping centre (As I'd also have to pick up a Vietnamese newspaper for my parents, as it was the only place in Western Sydney to have one) and asked what's the go with cutting back, and they strictly told me they never sold the other titles and it cost them alot to send them back or recycle it. They'd gladly order in any title for me if I paid for it upfront, but being in Sydney on an ad-hoc basis, it wasn't gonna work.
I still get my mags locally here in Wagga, or occasionally when I'm in Sydney and Melbourne and can visit the respective railfan bookstores, but this day and age of cutting back titles on the shelves, it really is becoming a sign of the times, and I do feel for the young adolescent emerging railfan who wants to get more out of his hobby by buying such publications (I.e. ME about 5 years ago), but can't because they're not in stock!
My 2 cents
Cheers

As I said years back the newsagent's were virtually forced to take magazines, when I worked at Gordon and Gotch we used to send out Playboy and Penthouse in bundles of 30 magazines, the minimum the newsagent could have was 30, ie 1 bundle but he might only sell 10, so the others had to be returned for a credit.
This credit was not in cash, but was a credit on your next order, you can probably see that in the end there was a fair bit of money tied up in credits, this sent a lot of newsagent's to the wall.
It was taken to court and beaten and so newsagent's now only order what THEY think will sell, if it sits on the shelf for a long time it is not selling so they will not get it again, it is only fair.
Just remember how many titles of magazines that can be seen in a newsagent, check the displays sometime, there are hundreds, there is a lot of money tied up sitting on those shelves and as the credit system no longer exist's the magazine simply sits there till it is sold, or way out of date and then has to be written off. The newsagent does not want to have to wipe a lot off, as he wants to make a living!

Has any one else had trouble getting the series? I got up to issue 4 then they disappeared. I asked the people at the newsagent and they said from now on I'd have to order it in, so I said ok, then came back for 3 weeks waiting for them to show up (even after I had paid for issue 5 to the newsagent).. After about 4 weeks I got a letter saying they haven't got enough stocks and it will be over 6 months... Now the newsagent wants me to pay in full..Just what I didn't want to do... Did anyone else have this trouble..Im beginning to thing the whole thing was a big jip..Buy the first 4, not to mention all the tools, then nothing..

Well this is an interesting dicussion about model mags and newsagents. I had wondered why now there was only 1 or 2 copies of certain magazines when they got them in rather than a nice pile of them as in the past, guess i figured they were popular!
I had noticed my country town newsagent used to have a wonderful selection of model mags although this too seemed to decline over time.
Indeed, while ordering only mags you expect to sell is good for the newsagent but not great for the individual browser I would sooner have a newsagent there than none at all. If you place a regular order you can get the titles you want but it does take a bit of convincing.

There's always an individual subscription, I like my local newsagent, he needs money too, but if he can't/won't get what I want in, then I tell them to bugger off and I subscribe to it myself.

Well I just received the latest delivery, So far I have found Bisset Mags... I order direct, to be reasonable, but clearly they do seem to be difficult to contact. I rang them once to confirm my order and they are as bad as telstra.
However it seems like my orders arrive on time, I pay no additional postage and I have even got issue one on back order when they sent out an amendment in a later issue; cosequently I had to build issue one twice.
My experience so far has been relatively possitive, I find the instructions far more detailed than a typical loco kit, and I enjoy the Train info in the booklets too.
Really, as someone who has built 2 OO kits and currently working on a SEM VR S class I dont have significant complaints about the kit or service so far. And yes it is more expensive but I have to say I have enjoyed the kit AND the books and free dvds offered and given the drop in ozzie dollar my guess is that its probably now cheaper than buying the DJH kit, and not getting the extra books etc.
My only frustration is the fact that they tell people to assemble the chassis without wheels, or anything to keep it square... This is the critical thing in having a smooth running loco... I guess ill be waiting ages before the axels and wheels turn up, or ill have to get some 7mm scale axel pins to square everything up before i move on.

I have my kit coming thru on subscription also and apart from a few bloopers in the magazines it seems to be ok, although I dont think that the bush for the drawbar should be glued as they suggest. Also I have not installed the cab windows yet... I am not sure which way the flange should go, as the latest instructions seem to be the reverse of kit 1

Huh, good luck with that...
I was thinking about getting this when it first came out until I noticed it was A) horrifically expensive B) it was not the A3 version but the A1, I prefer the super-pacific version. Besides that, I don't even have a model railway or anything to run it on (or room to display it!) so the point is probably moot...
Speaking of newsagents, I buy about 6 different British magazines (the awesome Backtrack, Steam Railway, Steam World, Railway Bylines, BRILL, Heritage Railway, Steam Days, Hornby Mag and the occasional other one if they interest me). Aside from the expense (blasted changeover) theres only two newsagents that stock all of these in the places I go. There was one in Salisbury only a couple of minutes walk from my workplace, that closed down and the other two in range have very little of interest . I'm not into American trains (or modern ones) so that kind of kills my options!
