Great photos buddy.
I fired 1072 a week ago and it was cold, but it looks to be colder when you were there judging by the snow! Laughing

Could someone tell me the name of the crew on 1072, as I think I know them.

Please let me know by PM if ok.

Hi all

Thank you all for the kind feedback. I always felt there were many unseen moments around Tourist Railway workshops at night, and felt quite good that I could capture them and share them with you all.

a6et, PM sent.

Cheers

Received this enquiry by a6et and hope he doesn't mind me sharing it, as I've had another two of these enquiries!

Quote:
So what I am asking is that are such old black caps still able to purchased in non baseball type?

As I would love to get one if it they are still available.
Referring to the caps the depicted steam locomotive crew are wearing, from my understanding, I've had these hats referred to me as 'bowlers caps', similar style to those used by Cricketers. Zig Zag Railway's Clarence Shop did sell them for about $20, but I'm not sure if they still do, but a phone call to them should produce a suitable enquiry.

There are also various other hats adorned by locomotive crews, ranging from peak hats to even berets I've seen in some old Pommy photos.

Cheers

The issue of caps in steam days is any interesting one in many respect. During my time, I had at least 3 types. What was generally found was that each area tended to have different type (up to a point)

Crews at BMD, PTW, & some at Gosford in a high proportion during the 60's tended to have the US type caps, in many respects some from other depots referred to them in a derogatorry manner which I will not repeat.

The black peaked type similar to the cricket cap was made from a black polyestor cotton, & if anything was probably the most popular cap seen across the state, it was seen in depots on the North from MBK in Enfield & Eveliegh, & in some depots on the south.

It had a nick name of the Western Cap, owing to it being seen on almost every engineman from the west, also seen through Cowra & to the Harden crew.

A type of the same, had a floppy cap, & no button on the top, instead having press stud which clipped to the brim.

The berrett tended to be used by many of the migran crews that came from Europe after the war. Many of these men wore sweat rags jambed up under the back & down the neck.

A variation on it was also seen by other drivers who came over as well as seen elsewhere (see the 36class book with Fireman Don Smith on 3617 at Woolbrook on the Wallangarra tour) this was the berret, that had the rigid brim, taken from either a policeman or fire brigade officers cap, & sowed into the berret.

The last popular type was that shown in the mass crew photo on the SOP delievery run that almost had a saucepan aspect to it, I saw those only in Glbn, Coota & Junee crews.

Finally was the el cheapo. A sweat rag tied from each corner to form a boat shape, & then a couple of hankerchiefs placed inside, & then tightened by the knots to sit comfortably. This had the advantage of in the summer, you could dump it in the water bucket for head cooling.

I currently have the Western Cap but sadly only as a baseball type with the plastic joining clip along the back, they would not have lasted very long. Although it looks the part, would love the genuine article, as a momento.

The ones that we had at Zig Zag are made by C & D Albion, they make THE cricket hats (baggy green) if that helps.

Years ago, I was looking for the blue ones we sold at Clarence, and went to various sports stores, only to be told they didn't stock them. Was even told off by one sheila at a Rebel Sport that I was being 'disrespectful' to the cricket team by wanting one.... Confused Evil or Very Mad

I don't even like Cricket!

So we're all disrespectful to the baggy green if we wear black versions hey? smeg I better throw out my Wentworth Falls C.C. cap that's identical to the ZZR ones. (bar the colours)

Unfortunately Maikha It's a bit difficult to just grab one as they're usually ordered in sets of 11 or 12 for a team after winning a final etc.
