Went to Bendigo on Friday L/E on T357 and did a little shunt then brought a couple of CHOY's back to Tottenham. The evidence is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NS_qTHWi-Fo
and will cost you considerable bandwidth and 18' of your life to view.

Good vid, thx.

I've always wondered. With signals, what is the meaning of the upper and lower. I noticed that sometimes green was above and red below, other times the opposite.

Cheers.

You can check Vicsig, but basically:

Green over Red - Clear Normal Speed
Yellow over Red - Normal Speed Warning
Red over Red - Stop
Red over Green - Clear Medium Speed
Red over Yellow - Medium Speed Warning
Yellow over Green - Reduce to Medium Speed (i.e. next signal at "medium")
Yellow over Yellow - Repeater, next signal Warning (2-position)
Green over Yellow - Repeater, next signal Clear (2-position)
Red over Red over Yellow - Low Speed Caution

Not used in Victoria:
Red over Red over Green
Green over Green

If the lights are staggered, they are an Automatic (not controlled, usually). If the lights are vertical, they are a "home", and are controlled.

Auto's can be passed at stop after ten seconds at Driver's discretion.

So, the only difference between green/red and red/green, is that the latter is only 40kph, while the former is at line speed (whatever that may be - up to 160kph).

Up to there you were going well but
Autos now require a thirty second stop and are only passed under strict guidlines.....one of which is the drivers discretion. Changes were introduced following a spate of rear end collisions in the suburban area.
Some automatic signals are controlled but lets not go there. There was even a home signal opposite Middle Footscray on the dual gauge that operated as an automatic. This is Victoria; there are no absolutes.
Speed for a bottom light is 40kph unless indicated otherwise. IE 65kph or 80kph at say, Sunbury for instance.
Oh and a double yellow was also used to indicate the approach to a three position area when the next was at red. Somerton and St Albans on the up being two examples. ( I said " was" )
There was also a repeater at Ferntree Gully that used to show reduce to medium. When the single line between there and Upper Gully was clear we used to get a bottom yellow in to the platform.
I think there was another on the down at Castlemaine that did it as well but I never saw it as I was on the sparks at that time.

Great video! I travel on that line every day between Malmsbury and Melbourne. Nice to see it from the driver's cab. I might have even glimpsed my car through the trees at Malmsbury station (not the white car on the left)

It does look like there are still a lot of wooden sleepers between Taradale and Bendigo, and I mean on the side that was supposed to be upgraded. Sad

Hey thanks for sharing Very Happy

I would like to see more day to day workings from the drivers cab on the Victorian lines, this video showed me just how long your day can become when you have speed restriction's on some lines.

Thanks again
