Greens MP Lee Rhiannon is calling on the New South Wales Government to finish the Maldon-Dombarton rail line to service the expansion of Port Kembla.

The Port Kembla Port Corporation will today unveil a plan to reclaim 52 hectares of land and create seven new berths.

Ms Rhiannon says the proposal to double the port's cargo-handling facilities means the rail line is a necessity.

"The Illawarra area is already under enormous pressure with so much freight being moved by road now we need to ensure that the bulk of that freight is moved by rail," she said.

"The completion of the Maldon-to-Dombarton rail line has the advantage that it can both be for commuter use as well as becoming an additional freight line."

What are the 7 new berths for? Export coal and steel, and importing iron ore?

I wish they'd make up their minds. This would just make it easier to export coal, and after the Newcastle kerfuffle I thought they were against that.

No, from what I can gather, the pictures in the paper, it looks like containers and general cargo. Export coal, steel and grain, and imported cars and iron ore are all in the Inner Harbour. This proposed development is for the Outer Harbour.

See the Illawarra Mercury articles here:

Expansion to increase Port Kembla

I heard on the radio yesterday arvo that Newcastle are pissed off about this idea. They want their port to take up any slack from Sydney. With the Maldon Dombarton line and SSFL, Port Kembla would be a much better option, IMHO. Newcastle has the monster coal exports already, give the general cargo to the Illawarra, which is closer to Sydney.

It always get's a bit scary when any polly reckons we sohuld just go and build something without trying to fix the underlying issues.

When it comes to rail, there are so many important things to fix before just building a new bit of railway line. I'm thinking or getting both modes to pay fair access fees, rail regulations need to be sorted, trying to reduce the start-up costs of rail operations, investments based on need and not polly wish lists....

It doesn't take much to rattle the Novacastrian cage , mind you they were done over royally in the early days hence the short north - north of Brooklyn ...

I think it's time the Illa got a bit more in its backyard - closer to a larger market than Newcastle . They have massive amounts of coal to think about so let them do what they're specializing in there . No need to potentially over crowd the short north lines either , snail rails got that covered .
