Nobody in there right mind, travels by rail at night. Unless they have to. There are now no-go area's in Melb. Broadmeadows, Springvale, Noble Park etc. Put police back on the trains. The current security is a joke. Crims and ethnic gangs rule the rails at night.

Just saw on 9 news something about the system being unsafe, footage of Dandenong, Noble Park and others pretty much summed it up for me with regards to what the story was about.

Well, the problem is that the pollies don't have to ride the trains at night, so according to them all is well.
A bit like out of mind, out of sight.
But I don't think it is just trains, but society in general that is becoming dangerous, too many sub cultures developing I think.

I make it a point to be indoors by nightfall. I have a few friends who'd help me out with gangs but I'd rather not need it. Still, I really got to learn not to tell vandals where to go.

Seven News had a similar story as National Nine News, but had a live cross from Westall station.
Some footage made it look like some stations are far too dark at night. ALL stations should be installed with the new "White Lights" which are being rolled out at Premium Stations ASAP. A low-cost short term project which immediately makes it look like Connex and Brumby are doing something about safety.

Rail isn't that bad at night. I use it quite often and have never had any troubles. However my station has now had white lights installed which make it more plesent to wait at. If you keep to yourself, and just look out the window and even sit in the front carrige you can pretty much stay trouble free. However there is more than can be done in terms of staff presence on trains at night.

When i was in Melbourne in june i didnt dare use the metro rail after sunset as everyone had spoken to said its too dangerous. Its well known around the world now that melbournes metro rail system is not safe at night and its best to go by private car after 6pm at night. As this is what i did too get a lift in family and friends cars to avoid the dangers of the railways.
On the other hand the metro buses feel safer but the very dark and all too quiet sois of Melbourne's suburbs don't make it feel safe at all. Some better road side lighting across all of Melbourne would help to make the streets safer. Plus CCTV that is real time monitored in areas of shopping and transport interchanges and metro stations would help too.

I think travelling after 6pm is alright as it is still peak hour, after about 7:30 inner suburban - 8:30 outer suburban it becomes a little bit more unsafe, but if you stay in the front carriage and mind your own business you should be Ok

That - and the whole thread is a load of rubbish. Sounds like many of you need to get out a bit more and STOP WATCHING TODAY TONIGHT!!!
I've lived in Europe, the UK, and travelled through much of the world, and there's very few places that I've felt completely unsafe. Some a little uneasy - such as parts of Paris and New York, but statements such as the highlighted one above are laughable.
Melbourne is one of the safest cities on the planet for its size. Yeah there is crime, but not enough to actually not go out. As for avoiding public transport at night, you've still got a FAR higher chance statistically of injury or death driving a car.
Methinks the kind of people who avoid the trains after sunset are probably the kinds of people who don't go out anyway.
Better you all stay at home watching Border Security. And remember - Be alert, not alarmed!

Have any of you ever travelled at night?
Or does Channels Seven and Nine spook you enough to keep you away?
Many trains in the evening, especially to the city, are full of young girls done up to the nines, heading in to the nightlife of Melbourne. They are, no doubt, hoping to go home in a red Ferrari as many are on the last or second last ups.
Where is the evidence from Nine and Seven? Their story seemed to be started by a stabbing on a bus at Chadstone. Damn long way from a railway, there.

^Yeah Daly Waters that's too true about the full trains. You couldn't swing a cat in many late evening services, let alone a knife!
I've been travelling the trains at all hours for years - Belgrave, Dandenong, Glen Waverley, and now the Sydenham lines - and the feeling of safety has in my mind only increased, because the patronage has.
I remember back in the dark days of the 90s when there was only one carriage lit at night, and even that was often empty.
Now it's a case of trying to find a seat on many late evening weekday services.
As for "gangs ruling the system" - the only gang-like presence I see on the system are those hired by Connex for "Customer Service" purposes in their recycled KGB uniforms.

It sounds like the buses are becoming just as dangerous as trains at night, I definetly don't feel safe at night anymore.
Border security is a good show!

Said it before: I've been using public transport in Melbourne since about 1990. In that time (5-6 years longer than I'd say all but two people here have been alive) I've been accosted once. And that was in 1993. By someone I went to school back then by who didn't like the fact that he was known as D-cup.
That includes the last up from Frankston on a Saturday night, to and from Lilydale, Dandenong and Cranbourne late at night and during footy crowds. In fact, I was at Springvale station - at night mark you with a laptop a month ago: not a single spot of violence.
Anonymous - and proud of it.
