My 'sources' have revealed to me that early yesterday morning, in the dead of night, T Class 371 ex Ballarat Workshops at 02.23 as train 9162 hauled the first Platinum class Car No BRG 171 to Anzac Siding at Spotswood where it will be bogie exchanged for eventual deployment on The Ghan service to Darwin.
At this stage its scheduled to travel empty to Adelaide on tomorrow, Thursday mornings 'Overland.
Mike, still in Georgetown but connected to the rest of the World  
The Vinelander, from Melbourne to Mildura was Victoria's only overnight sleeping car train which was launched 8/8/1972.
Ballan, the best town, on the best railway line, in the best state, of the best country in the World. Currently in Longreach.

It wasn't T 371 as that's on SG.
I heard it was T413 from Ballarat to Newport W/Shops then T395 later on into Anzac siding.
T386 did the SG transfer to South Dynon at about 1500.

I got the following pic yesterday at South Dynon.
Rumour suggests it's destined for use on the new Southern Spirit service.

It's interesting to see what they've done to the windows... Take a closer look
I'm not a fan of it at all, thats for sure
It's recked the classic Budd/Comeng Streamlined Stainless Steel look the RoA/Trans Aust'n/IP/Ghan Cars were famous for

I'm a fan of the constant tint windows, It gives the car a modern looking appearance, lets hope the same can be said for the Interior!

I'd have to agree, the full length, dark tint windows look pretty good, very sleek and modern.
The average punter getting on it wants a modern look, too, I suppose.
Love to see the interior, though, must be top notch!

Would be ideal if once the fully refurb'd consist for The S'thn Spirit, is ready to roll, that GSR holds an open day to show case the train inside & out at Keswick in ADL, S'thn Cross in Melb. & Syd. Central, as well as perhaps Roma St in Brissy...

The car was built in 1966 - it's over 40 years old it's time to think about putting it in a museum or giving it to a heritage operation not revamp it for modern service. I agree with the poster that doesn't like it - I think it is not a great improvement. If the interior publicity photos are anything to go by expect the car to look like it was designed by IKEA (yuk!!!!!!)
Has anyone else noticed the way the black mirror windows stop at the non-vestibule end  love the hand hold for the shunter - really shows a careful bit of sympathetic design.
This reminds me of the way the CR in the 1950s tried to make wooden cars look like the wegmann A/C cars. The looked like what they where - 'old tarted up carriages' not 'modern rolling stock'.
I guess we couldn't expect anything better from the people that brought you the 'new less than improved' Overland refurbishment.

From what i could see yesterday, its all wood panelling inside and it looks 5 star material. Looks really really nice inside.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I think they should lose the constant tinting, looks cheap and nasty, not the best look for a luxury train IMHO.

That'd be good actually, like they did for the Overland. If they did, hopefully they put a clean loco on the consist...

Not to mention the people who took a really good product - Red Kangaroo sleepers - and made it into something appalling.
