I'm heading up to Broken Hill between the 7th and 10th of August and I'm wondering if anybody could tell me if I can expect anything irregular heading through (like a Pacific National grain, or Coote transfer). I'm already aware of the Outback Aurora heading up there.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: See posts below for sightings and photos.

You will be there for several Indian Pacific movements. I presume you will be in your own car.

The IP on thur AM westbound can be seen at the station and later between there and Cockburn. On friday PM it is good at Cockburn and around The Pinnicles eastbound. There is sufficient time to get back to Broken Hill before it departs for Sydney. If you are a very early bird you can catch it westbound at Menindie.

Freights vary and you should look up the ARTC TAA's. There is usually only one or two per day through in daylight. There are often some interesting sights of shunting around the mine yards.

Enjoy the trip and let us know of your successes.

All sightings are at Broken Hill unless otherwise noted.

I missed quite a few trains, in particular the ones that came through after dark. It was too cold... and I was sleeping. I also don't have all of the train numbers because I wasn't familiar with what's what up there.

I'll have photos of everything up soon. Sorry for the way I've arranged them, I don't post sightings often.

Thursday 7th:

(1630) RTS Sheds - G522, 8106, BL30(PN), 48s28(C)+442s1(C) and 48s34(SI). I think 48s31(S) was also out the back.

(1630) 4878 - Shunting
- 4878 previously stored at Port Augusta for two years

(1650) G522+8106 - Signal testing

(1730) NR64+NRxx - 4PS6?

(2030) NR6+NR99 - 6YN2?
- Dropped a single Origin Energy tank off and continued

Stored at Broken Hill is:
80x4(FC), 4841?(Candy), 80xx(Reverse), 48xx(Reverse), 8010(FC), 80xx(Reverse), 8018(FC), 48xx(Red), 80xx(Tuscan), 80xx(Tuscan), 8018(FC), 80x8(FC), 4502(Red), 45xx(Undercoat) and 8607(FC), the last electric in Broken Hill. Some look to be in good condition, while others are basically stripped down to their frame.

Also, 42101 if you read this and were still interested in the location of old wagons, I checked for the old water tank(?) wagons I said were up there, but they've disappeared. Smile

Friday 8th:

(0850) 44211+4520 - NSWRTM Special
- Seen outside Broken Hill, then followed it back. It arrived at 0900.

(0910) BL30(PN) - RTS Sheds

(0945) 4520+44211 - NSWRTM Special
- Ran around train and shunted it in to the second platform road.

(1020) 48s34(SI)+48s35(C) - Shunting
- Attached the Origin Energy wagon to the front of 48s34 and pushed it in to the Origin siding while also hauling ore wagons.

(1630) NR28(IP) - 6AS8
- Departed around 1830

Saturday 9th:

(1000) 4878 - Stabled

(1015) 8173+L270(PN)+8171 - 6AG3
- Crew change and waited for a cross

(1030) NR18+NR53(TR) - 6SP6
- 6AG3 departed after crossing 6SP6 and I followed it outside Broken Hill to get a few more photos.

(1430?) NR16(PN)+NRxx+NRxx - 6SP7
- Snuck through 40 minutes early, so I only caught a glimpse of it passing through. NR16 was in fresh Pacific National livery.

(1830) 4520+44211 - NSWRTM Special
- Departed Broken Hill for Sydney.

Sunday 10th: (Heading back to Adelaide)

(0745) NR32(PN) - 7SA8

(0851) NR78+NR88 - 5PS6 Freight
- Sighted between Cockburn and Yunta.
- 7SA8 flew past us at Yunta while we were having a break. We caught up to it at Jamestown where it crossed 6PS7.

(1151) NR50+NR103(PN) - 6PS7
-Sighted a Jamestown

(1203) NR32(PN) - 7SA8
- Sighted at Jamestown

(1306) G522+8106
- Stabled at Port Pirie

(1315) NRxx+NRxx - 1YN2
- Sighted at Crystal Brook

(1535) VL357+EL56 (with ECA98) - Light
- Heading to Port Flat. I could also see a Pacific National liveried NR and something else sitting further down the line at Wingfield(?) crossing it. I only noticed this later in a photo I took.

Mods: Please don't move this to Sightings. I plan on adding photos to this post in the next day or two. Thanks. Smile

That is one brilliant shot! The landscape tells it all more so than the train itself! Very Happy

Alyx,

I have to say that your photos have brought back memories of my trip to Broken hill in 2004 and 2006.

Your photography is better than excellent and you seemed to be in the right place at the right time.

Your obviously planned your photo taking down to a T, because some of thos e photos are really very very good.

Well Done.

And thankyou for sharing them with us.

Regards,

Wilfy 2007
