Everyone knows that the NSWRTM has a set of the famous Silver City Comet Carriages and Power Van DP104.

This thread is going to be a way of keeping everyone abreast of the work being undertaken and pictures of both before and after the internal restoration has been done.

Today work started on reopening 2 carriages so people can see the inside of the Comet and while this is happening restoration work will be undertaken on the other 2 cars.

For the record the NSWRTM has the following cars built by Ritchie Bros Auburn between 1937-1938 and provided Broken Hill and the West of NSW with 52 years of service until retired in November 1989.

DP 104 : Power Van built in 1938
DB 210: 1st Class Sitting Car Built 1938
DR 205: Restaurant Car Built 1938
DFZ 211: Economy/2nd Class Sitting Car Built 1938
HFT 208: Economy/2nd Class Sitting Car/Guards Van Built September 1937

Work is currently being done on the Power Car DP104 and has sucessfully ran trials between Thirlmere and Buxton on the Picton - Mittagong Loopline with mechanical work being done by the NSWRTM Mechanical Branch.

The internal restoration started today 4th August 2008 on DB210 and DR205 with 3 members of the NSWRTM and it was basically cleaning areas such as the dining area and kitchen in DR205 with a thick covering of dust covering the tables. But I believe that the following photos will show the work done in just 1 day.

DR205 Dining Area before commencement of work

DR205 Dining Area After a thorough cleaning and reinstallation of carpets

Interior of DB210 before internal cleaning with dusty dirty seats

Interior after cleaning in DB210

As I stated at the start of this post it will be a way of keeping everyone updated on whats happening with the work being done on the Comet.

If anyone
Starts complaining about anything I should inform you that your more than welcome to join the NSWRTM and come assist us or I will stop posting news and photographs with the persons responsible having there posts reported. Twisted Evil

Constructive Comments are more than welcome. Very Happy

No offense, but is this really important enough to be a sticky thread? This forum is already dogged by stickies, of which 4 others are already to do with NSW heritage.

Oh well, I presume a moderator approved it being sticky anyway.

Back on topic, it will be great to see a Silver City Comet running again. Certainly much more interesting than the Outback Xplorer which runs to Broken Hill presently!

Nah I decided to make it a sticky for selfish reasons....everyone else has a sticky Laughing but I will be fine with what decisions the moderators make on it. Very Happy

But yeah the start of the internal restoration is probably like a baby step to seeing the Comet in operation again.

I would believe so Simon they needed the seating and Luggage in the HFT as the train also carried supplies for the Far Western Towns it serviced along with the 2 classes of seating it could also be possible to drop the DFZ if the loading on the train was low.

I unfortunately never travelled on the Silver City Comet and my first time in the carriages myself was last Tuesday to have a formal inspection prior to commencing the work that you can see in the first post.

I would also like to invite Railpage Australia™ Members who have travelled on the Comet to share there experiences and photographs as well in this thread. Very Happy

I see.

See, the thing is, I have my differences with the RTM, but that's not important here. It's not important at all, because you have posted a fine and informative post. Well, that is to say, you did until the bit at the bottom, which I quoted.

Now, I'm tempted to complain just for the hell of it.

So, what you are trying to say is that, although the rest of us have to take our lumps on this board within reason (I'm not talking straight out abuse or anything here), you have a special dispensation that allows you to:
a)take your bat and ball and go home, and..
b)snitch to the mods, even if the other person has only disagreed with you, but not broken any rules.

Have I got that right?

Uh huh. I was afraid of that.

OK, here goes.

Report away, my good fellow.

Thanks very much for starting up this thread 4426_No_2_end. I'm really looking forward to reading the updates on its restoration.

I was often told about the Silver City Comet as a young child but never saw it in action.

The Silver City Comet certainly seems to be a significant part of New South Wales Railway's history but unfortunately it has hardly discussed on Railpage Australia™.

Also was the the Silver City Comet stored at Paterson at one stage?

Having a difference of opinion on things is good TLD™ but when we have people complaining about small trivial things like why didnt we do this instead of that and why didnt X Group get the Set is what I was actually complaining about (I might report myself on that Laughing ) and to try and keep the posts about what is actually happening with the Comet Set.

Spoke to Mum and she did wear Army Boots painted pink so thats fine. Laughing

Yes Mr Hanson that is indeed the same set that was at Patterson.

Just a quick note that the Silver City Comet will be open for public inspection within 2 weeks as soon as I complete repairs on a sturdy set of stairs and creating a few info boards.

I am also asking that if anyone has some good in service photographs of the Comet to please send me a PM as we would like to use them as part of a pictorial display. Thanks In Advance. Very Happy

It depends on what you mean by "The Comet" and when.

In the 1960s The HFT car was used on the "Central West Express" connection, which ran from Parkes to Dubbo and vice versa on alternate days providing a connecting service to and from Sydney. I think this train had a DF(Z) and an RFT, three cars in all plus the DP.

The Comet itself had a DH, DEH or EDH van which ran through from and to Sydney on the mail train, a couple of DF(Z) second class cars, the DR restaurant car and a DB first class car.

Of course, if there was a spare HFT it may have run on the Comet at peak times.

Thanks for the information M636C that you have posted its greatly appreciated as I am learning as much as I can for as I have never travelled on the Comet trainset and that is what I was also requesting personal stories about to get a passengers perspective on services provided by these carriages.

Also you mention DH,DEH and EDH type cars can you explain what they are and if they have been recoded what they are now please. Very Happy

Travelling on the Comet was indeed a wonderful experience 4426 - good luck with the restoration work.

As M636C mentions, the "usual consist" depends upon whether you are referring to the Silver City Comet service itself or one of the other services that the "Comet sets" operated at various times. The most comprehensive article that I have seen on all of the "Comet cars" is the very long article in Australian Diesel Scene Volume 2 (Eveleigh Press) - just about all the information you seek can be found there, including pictures of power car PH105 in flames near Ivanhoe in 1953 or thereabouts (as a result of which only 4 power cars survived to be re-engined and recoded to DP).

I will dig out the notes of my own trips from the early 1980's to give you some consist details, including for the shorter consists that used to make connections with the Central West Express services at Orange. M636C mentions the Parkes-Orange-Dubbo run: this operated from Forbes up until the time of the 1983 service cuts (I travelled from Forbes to Orange on a shortened set headed by DP102 in 1982). I think that at one stage in the 1970's there used to be a Sunday service involving a "short" Comet set running as far East as Lithgow. I will dig out the old timetables to check.

Don't forget too that at one stage the Federal City Express to Canberra was operated with these sets.

As for the Parkes-Broken Hill run, the main challenge in the days before continuously welded rail out there was to keep your "Comet Pie and Peas" on the dinner plate in the dining car and not to lose your beer. The ride at speed was quite "lively" to say the least! Pie, peas and beer on the Comet was one of the great unsung rail travel experiences in NSW...

The Comet was one of the great railway journeys.

Not only did it run Parkes - Broken Hill but also:
- Parkes (was it ever Forbes?)-Orange-Dubbo (via Wellington)
- Dubbo-Orange (via Molong) on Saturday nights
- Orange-Lithgow on Sundays.

Later in the XPT era it operated Orange-Broken Hill-Orange as the Silver City Comet with positioning runs Parkes-Orange-Parkes.

On tours, it has reached Tamworth, Gwabegar, Griffith via Hillston, Tocumwal, Melbourne, Brisbane, Murwillumbah, Melbourne and others.

I have a slide buried somewhere here of a Comet set at Dubbo from around '70 or '71 facing the west. My writing calls it 'Far West Express'. I guess it ran to Cobar or Bourke then.
