Hi Michael,
Thank you for your comment, while standing there in front of that loco, I kinda felt like Weeman looking up at it. I got a new/second hand Sony Cybershot camera and I wanted to take it out and start learning to use it, I'm quite impressed with it so far.

Good shots lonegunman, she s in for the usual trip inspection we took her over an picked up 5005, the runs out to Ulan take there toll on air filters, shes a good engine 09 along with 04 they are all the same 'as you know' but when operating them every day ya can pick the little things from one engine to the next, the lads at UG have being trying some new software on the computing system, theres talk in the depot that a new rake of wagons may come on line around mid 2009, but its still to be set in concrete, i my shelf think it ll happen with the new loader coming along at a rapid rate, an the expansion of coal export there talking about in the next couple of years, but time will tell hope this helped fella s

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the comments, I enjoy getting pictures at United's plant, just to frustrate the security guards. While I was taking my pictures of 5009, I also noticed a few new hood sections just behind 5009 about 25 metres away from the fence, these being the hoods for the 92 class. I have a better camera now so I'll be ready for the new hoppers to take shape at UG. I'm curious to know how accessible the 421 class is on Kooragang as I'd love to get pictures of my own of this loco?

I've got shots of the 421 (42102?) just after it was repainted in the "candy" colours. It is stored at the back of the cement works, but I think there is a drainage canal just West of the track.
A couple of years ago I walked in following the drain on the far side from the cement works, and it was fairly easy to get shots in the afternoon with the light on the near side. I think it was even clear of the fence along the drain, since it is on an embankment.
Since then I imagine the weeds may have grown taller and the shot might not be as easy. It is quite a long walk in there (about a kilometre) but at the time there were no fences blocking you and you could park the car clear of the road. You couldn't drive all the way in there, though.
If some development has taken place, there may be new fences, but not when I tried it.
I was so pleased, I went to HobbyCo the next day and purchased the Austrains HO model in the same colours- I had only purchased an Indian Red one previously.
For VRFan, I think there was a third rail on part of the track near the fence at Goninan, probably for testing Sprinters. The only Sprinter I saw there was on temporary standard gauge bogies. I don't think there is dual gauge anywhere else in the plant.

Hey that is a wounderful shot mate. To me the QRN 5000 class is the most awesome diesel to be running around on the Hunter Valley lines.
I hear them go through Greta quite a bit, they have a habbit of waking me up at like 9 in the morning. But a nice sound to wake up to.
Nice photo keep up the 5000 class shots

I think it might be. Judging by the closeness of the two rails, I would assume it to be standard and broad gauge track.
If my memory serves me correctly, the Sprinters were built at Goninans. Is that right?

Quick Vote for the first photo.....excellent photograph.
And yep the Sprinters were indeed built by the then Goninan Company at Broadmeadow known now as UGR.
I remember seeing them pass through Sydney on Standard Gauge transfer bogies and as per usual I did not have a camera handy.

Is there anywhere in the Hunter Valley these heavy bastards can be washed?

The only place that a 5000 can be washed at is Goninans.
Just got to keep them out of number 3 tunnel on the Ulan line. Two passes through that and everything is black.
