Why is the frequency on the Bankstown line so low anyway? I mean 2 trains per hour off peak is really annoying sometimes. I'm guessing that this is something to do with the number of tracks available? Are there plans to increase the frequency of trains at a later date?

Oh poor didums only one train every 30mins off peak have you bothered to see how few people are on the ofpeak runs between stations on this line, no ofcourse you have not....i used it today and the car i was in on the 1139 ex Liverpool all the way to Campsie would not have even been half full like on every other trip i have taken offpeak on this line...Quit whinging for the sake of doing so.

My timetable says (for Campsie):

1313
1328
1343
1358
1413
1428...

I guess those other two trains an hour must be ghost trains then?

Banko line gets FOUR TPH off peak on a weekday. Two proceed to Liverpool and two form Inner West line trains at Lidcome (currently). If you mean to talk about weekends, you'd best mention that in your post...

Inner West line, to compare gets TWO TPH off peak on a weekday. Northern line, TWO TPH...

Some balanced thoughts on the Banko:

The Bankstown line is pretty bloody good if you are using it to just run up and down the thing - off to the doctor's in Campsie, over to Bankstown Sports Club, etc. 4pth even in the off-peak. No complaints there. The frequency, as 42101 and Raichase point out, is fine. Sure, I'd like metro frequency, but that's too much to ask for.

So that's the positive side. Now for the negatives:

The Banko starts to wear a bit thin if you want to travel further. Even going into the city starts getting you a bit ticked off about the all-bloody-stations-all-the-bloody-time nature of it. Live in Belmore, and it's a slog into town, but my neighbours in Burwood get into the city so fast I can picture their faces contorting like astronauts being launched. The reality is, though, that we can't have more express trains than the few peak ones we have without sacrificing some frequency at the smaller stations (of which mine is one).

The real problems with the Bankstown Line come when you wish to head west. The Liverpool trains have been slowed down (ever gone from the City to Livo all stops via Bankstown? not fun). Passengers for the Western Line have a twenty-five minute wait at Lidcombe, and the angry-making ironic reason for this is that we get held up at a red stick on the Lidcombe triangle to give the road to the very train we want to catch! So, to rub salt into the wound, we can look out the window and see it sailing serenely by. Surely, the timetable could be tweaked for giving the ex-Banko the road, and enough time for us to scramble over the footbridge. And the Bankstown - Blacktown services have been gone for years. Then there's the ubiquitous ten minute wait at Bankstown, and the twenty minute one on weekends due to the terminators. My trip from Belmore to Mt Druitt on weekends involves nearly fifty minutes of waiting at intermediate stations (and an extra train).

Verdict: the Bankstown Line has a good service if you just want to use it as a metro. Just don't try getting creative with it.

...Cronulla - 2 TPH
Waterfall - 2 TPH
All stoppers on the Illawarra - 2 TPH
All stoppers on the East Hills line - 2 TPH
Guess how many Richmond gets?
Holsworthy, Casula, Macarthur?

Slightly related, I had cause to drive to Macarthur last night, and it occurred to me that it is really time to stop terminating trains at Campbelltown. Macarthur has a uni, botanical gardens, huge shopping centre and two hospitals. If it had the parking it could easily match Campbelltown as a park 'n' ride stop too. Surely that's enough to justify running a train one more stop so the pax don't have to wait for quarter of an hour for a train to take them to the next stop.

Yes, I acklowledge it might need another terminating platform before this is really viable.

I am SO moving to Victoria Street!!

That is the major problem with CityRail - customer information.

A few years back, Parramatta would wait until after the Granville - Strathfield - City train had left before advising the next won't be stopping at Lidcombe "for today only". Too bad there was a connection from Granville that meant you wouldn't have to wait >30 minutes at Lidcombe for the Banko or Liverpool via Rego.

Could be a case of the station not having information passed on from the signal box, or train control before the limited stops train departed.

No, actually questioned the staff who admitted to having known for quite a while that it was canceled.

If this is the case then you should put in a complaint against the particular station staff in question. They are meant to provide the information as soon as they can so that passengers may make alternate arrangements, especially if theres another service that can potentially take passengers to their destination.

Having said that there are times when notice isn't given, train may break down just before the station or a sick passenger and there are times where the signal box is at fault, but you did state they did know about it with enough time and that's when you use the phone. I make it a point when I'm at work to let the stations know enough in advance where possible especially when there are alternative trains.

Would hope things are changing with new procedures being brought through Railcorp these days.
Personally speaking as a CSA, when ever there is advice of delayed/cancelled/altered stops services rule number one, let the passengers know ASAP.
