From an ONTRACK Staff Newsletter.
RAIN, RAIN AND MORE RAIN
And still it rains. The return of heavy rain and flooding to the
South Island has re-activated a slip south of Kaikoura and closed the
Main North Line.
There was flooding in the Picton area and the Waiau River threatened
to burst its banks on Sunday. During the first week of August the
slip dumped more than 30,000 cubic metres of earth onto the railway
line and adjacent state highway. At the time, there was a great deal
more unstable land behind the slip. The continuing wet weather has
triggered another slip which is likely to be almost as difficult to
clear as its predecessor.
The bad weather also delayed getting piling equipment into place to
drive the piles for the Hou Hou Creek bridge on the Hokitika branch
line. A start on driving piles was delayed from last week to this
week.
In Auckland, wet weather has hampered work on DART projects. Staff in
Auckland say, it has rained at some point every weekend in the city
since May.
