The Optus Zoo article to watch seems to be http://optuszoo.news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=626330 which is marked MORE TO COME. However, it's not worth watching because they're updating the article that 42101 cited instead.

Quote:
Mr Rees has emerged from a Labor caucus meeting at NSW Parliament where he confirmed he had replaced Morris Iemma. Carmel Tebbutt is his new deputy, he said. "As you all know Morris Iemma resigned as premier today, I nominated for the vacancy and I was elected unanimously by the full Labor caucus," he told reporters. "In addition to that, Carmel Tebbutt has the full support of the caucus for the deputy premier position." "We start work today for the people of NSW, we start work this afternoon to deliver services to the people of NSW," he said.

Mr Rees and Ms Tebbutt left the party room meeting smiling broadly and to the sound of applause from their colleagues.
...
Earlier today, Mr Iemma went to his powerful right faction with a plan to push Treasurer Michael Costa off the frontbench and promote Mr Rees, Ms Tebbutt, Kristina Keneally, Linda Burney, and Verity Firth. He also planned to demote Gaming and Racing Minister Graham West and Health Minister Reba Meagher, and add to the responsibilities of Attorney General John Hatzistergos and Police Minister David Campbell. But Mr Iemma's Centre Unity caucus baulked at the plan, forcing him to fall on his sword.
"He was told by caucus that was something they weren't prepared to go along with, they would not accept the removal of West and Meagher," political analyst Bruce Hawker told AAP. "As a result of that he said that 'I don't think I can go on as premier' if he couldn't have the support of his faction."

Michael Costa earlier on Friday had indicated he would challenge Mr Iemma's decision to dump him from the cabinet, prompting a showdown.

The Herald had an article with headline like "Costa stands defiant". It has now changed to Iemma dumped by Powerful Right Faction

Quote:
Newcomer, Water Minister Nathan Rees, who entered parliament just 18 months ago, has been tipped to take over but Sky News reports he could be challenged for the job by Carmel Tebbutt. Ms Tebbutt on Thursday accepted the left faction's nomination for the deputy premier's position, vacated by John Watkins.

If it was a widened division between the right and left (over the power privatisation) that made the Premier's resignation imminent, then it makes sense that the left would field a candidate to challenge Rees for the Premier's job.

Quote:
Bookmakers have reacted swiftly to the NSW Labor Party bloodbath today, slashing the opposition's odds for the upcoming election as thousands of dollars pour in.
...
The Liberals are now a clear-cut $1.70 short-priced favourite to take the next state election — scheduled for either late 2010 or early 2011 — with Labor drifting out to $2.10 this morning.

"So far, the opposition has boasted 60 percent of both money and bet numbers," Centrebet's Neil Evans said. "No one expected Costa and Iemma to go on the same day. "There's an even wider feeling now the Liberals, under a likely Barry O'Farrell and Mike Baird leadership team, only have to stay on their political feet to claim victory next time around."

Quote:
Dumped NSW Premier Morris Iemma and Treasurer Michael Costa should be made to stick around and dig NSW out of its debt mess, the opposition says.
...
Treasurer Michael Costa's fate is still uncertain, because Friday's caucus meeting did not consider the make-up of the full ministry. That will now be decided at a caucus meeting on Sunday.
...
Mr O'Farrell said Labor was still playing with the same old team. "With Carmel Tebbutt and Nathan Rees, what is common to them both is they've been part of this same outfit, the same outfit that wasted record revenues in the good times and delivered none of the benefits of that record revenue to communities across this state and across this city," he said.

Meanwhile, Property developers have wasted no time in their efforts to get the new premier of NSW onside. Before the election of Nathan Rees as the new Labor Party leader had been officially confirmed, the lobby group Urban Taskforce rushed to praise him. "The appointment of a new premier inspires hope that the NSW property development industry can recover," it said in a statement.

Regardless of what O'Farrell says, Iemma is not sticking around!
Quote:
Morris Iemma says he is quitting politics after resigning as premier of NSW earlier today.

In his final speech as a politician, the outgoing premier said he never sought personal glory, perks or a place in the history books.

He told reporters he was resigning as Member for Lakemba and would not sit on the backbench.

http://news.smh.com.au/national/exnsw-premier-iemma-quits-politics-20080905-4agn.html

Costa won't be doing much if he does stick around.
Quote:
New NSW Premier Nathan Rees says sacked Treasurer Michael Costa will not be returning to the new-look cabinet.
...
Mr Costa used his press conference on Friday to detail his concerns over the state's ability to retain its AAA credit rating, saying state revenues were being undermined by the slowing Australian economy. He said NSW was facing a dramatic drop in revenues from stamp duty, approaching $200 million in the first two months of the 2008/09 financial year, as a result of the economic slowdown. He also said the health budget had blown out by $300 million so far this financial year. "My issue is with the funding of the north-west Metro (rail line) costing $12 billion, which is not sustainable unless we cut spending in other areas - our health and education programs," Mr Costa added.

Mr Costa blamed a lack of reform "at the state and the federal level" for the blow-outs faced in areas such as health.
...
Mr Rees was adamant there was no place in his cabinet for Mr Costa. "There is a caucus meeting over the weekend. There is a process to be followed there, I am not going to speculate or comment on the make-up of the cabinet," he said. "... other than to say Michael Costa will not be returning to the cabinet."
Mr Rees refused to be drawn on Mr Costa's time as treasurer. But he said Mr Costa had been a "disruptive" force within cabinet.

As yet, there is no mention of Sartor. I'd guess that the swearing-in of a new cabinet will occur around Wednesday next week.

An extraordinary day! So much politics going for Today, Tomorrow and Sunday! Today, Iemma gone - excellent. I doubt Rees will much better - he's young and doesn't have much experience. But shifting Carmel Tebbutt in the DP chair is good - she's a great politician.

Can't wait till Sunday for full announcements of the new look NSW cabinet.

So much blood, and we still don't have a transport minister! Wink

At least it won't be Costa. I wonder if the 2.5% pay claim limit will go with him, and the firey's, nurses and cops can get something resembling a cost of living increase without selling the family silver. Or will the new guys cry poor too? After Costa and Co, they probably are poor.

Hopefully shall be sorted out as early as today!

Sydney Morning Herald wrote:

I feel cheated: Sartor

Former NSW planning minister Frank Sartor says he feels cheated, claiming Premier Nathan Rees has made a mistake in dropping him from the front bench.

The bloodletting continued in NSW Labor ranks today, with Mr Sartor becoming one of three high profile casualties, joining Michael Costa who was dumped on Friday, and Reba Meagher, who last night ruled herself out of contention before she could be pushed.

At a press conference after the new-look cabinet was unveiled, Mr Sartor said he was concerned Mr Rees' decision to drop him would leave insufficient experience in his cabinet.

"I personally think he's made a mistake," he said.

"I've told the premier he's made a mistake, but that's a decision for him.

"The government has huge challenges ahead, and what they need is talent and experience and while I think there are some good people in the ministry, I hope they know what they're doing."

Mr Sartor said he would continue to represent his electorate of Rockdale, most likely until the next election.

Mr Sartor said in nearly 17 years of elected office, he had made many contributions to the City of Sydney, of which he was former lord mayor, and the state of NSW.

He pointed to his "transformation" of Sydney, the establishment of the Cancer Institute of NSW, the Water and Energy Savings Fund - now the Climate Change Fund, the smoking ban in pubs and clubs and difficult planning reforms.

"I've done all this in good faith," said Mr Sartor, who added there had been "a lot of tears" at the caucus meeting this morning when his axing was announced.

"I think I've achieved the attributes that Nathan Rees said he wanted which were skill or intelligence, hard work and courage.

"Maybe I wasn't courageous enough."

Asked whether he felt cheated by the premier's decision Mr Sartor replied: "A little bit, yeah. Of course you do. Anyone would feel that way."

Accompanied by his wife Monique and son William, Mr Sartor struggled with his emotions as he spoke about his plans for the future.

"In recent times I've thought about young William, particularly when I go to work in the morning and he looks at me as I walk out the door and I think `gee, I'd rather stay home with you' ...

"I got my wish," a teary Mr Sartor said.

He said he wasn't a "bomb-thrower" and while he would be writing a book about his work in the City of Sydney it would not be "Latham-esque".

They're tipping David Campbell for the transport portfolio. Looks like a cross between W.C. Fields and a Walrus. Was Mayor of Wollongong in the 90's. He doesn't strike me as particularly talented, more of a Labor good old boy. Transport's a heart breaker of a job these days anyway, and with no money...

Yes, he's got it.
Quote:
NSW Premier Nathan Rees has finalised his new cabinet, naming Eric Roozendaal as the state's new treasurer and putting John Della Bosca in charge of health.

After announcing the members of the frontbench Sunday, Mr Rees on Monday revealed the allocation of portfolios.

John Hatzistergos remains attorney-general, while Deputy Premier Carmel Tebbutt takes on the climate change and environment portfolio as well as commerce. David Campbell has been promoted from the police portfolio to the important transport ministry, while Verity Firth takes over education and training, as well as women.

http://news.smh.com.au/national/nathan-rees-names-new-nsw-cabinet-20080908-4bmh.html

The swearing-in looks to be at midday today too.
Quote:
On Sunday, he spruiked the economic credentials of right faction heavyweight Joe Tripodi, who is tipped to get the finance portfolio.

The ministers will all be sworn in at Government House Monday at noon.

Meanwhile, federal opposition leader Brendan Nelson has said that Nathan Rees must have known about the state's financial problems while he was in cabinet, unless the treasurer and former premier kept them secret. "Either he's not being honest or he wasn't listening to what was going on or he wasn't paying account to what the broader responsibilities of being a minister are." "Or alternatively the former treasurer and premier were not putting things on the table."
