Hi All

As you can see the topic is SMR 18's smokebox. I remember when it used to haul the Cockatoo Run that it's smokebox was level with the front of the tanks (I was only about 7 at the time so my memory might be slightly hazy).

However when it was returned to service, Bradken did a run with 18, SWT 12 (?), 3801 ltds crew carriage (not their PHG) and 4906, to Moss Vale and then north to Picton. I was fortunate to travel on this consist, however when I look back at these pictures I noticed the extension.

Heres my questions:

1. When was it done (I found it was around '95? - comfirmation needed)
2. Why was it done?
3. Did any other member of its class have a similar modification? (both decades ago, or recently)
4. Approx dimensions?

Thanks in advance for your input

I remember that it was extended for 3801ltd for use on the cockatoo run before they got it back in the 90's.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi

No other 10 class has a smokebox extension. #18 has a self cleaning smokebox and a NSWGR (I believe) smokebox door.

Cheers

It was indeed modified for operations on The Cockatoo Run with 3801Limited. Part of the leasing, or hire, arrangements was that the loco had to be returned in same/similar condition as pre-hire so went to Bradken to be un-modified.

One thing I cant work out though with TE2815's comment is why would you make the modification, un-modify it and then do the same thing again? Confused

Doesnt make sense - I sure that as part of the herritage bill that protects all of the 10 class locomotives should say something about permission to make such modifications? To boil it down into one simple question - Does the herritage bill favour such a modification (after all it is an improvement), or must 18 remain ascetically the same as her sisters.

Im not favouring any particular side of this question (even though personally I reckon it looks better if the smokebox is not extended), Im just wondering what made the people who leased 18 to '01 Ltd send it to Bradken to get unmodified?

Strange isnt it?

Cheers

The owners required 3801LTD to restore the engine to that condition.

3801LTD had to, so I believe, modify so it be suitable to operate up the mountain.

Paging MBAX for clarification Exclamation
