Well given the seemingly productionline of train orders now.. all in an adhoc and panicked fashion you have to ask why we are continuing with thsi design a..when we could be working on the next gen - system wide design ..and locally built/asssembled/engineered or stuck together !!

Must be some great junket trips to Paris !! Rolling Eyes
Still then the powers that be wouldn thave to be here to answer to their lack of vision.

Anyone notice...the Roads get a nod whilst we ( rail ) get an ancient tunnel !! Confused

It seems that both of the controversial "big-ticket items" have been removed, one of which was a tollway and the other of which was a railway. There were definitely some lobbyists who paired them so as to ensure that both attracted equal controversy and either both or neither were built.

This leaves two road improvements and an increase in bus frequencies on some routes.

public-private partnerships across the train network in which developers build new railway stations in return for the right to build above the stations
I assume that this is a way of achieving cheap grade-separations.

It's the tunnel for the freight line. How is it underused? Even if it is, it's stupid to combine freight and suburban lines. Oh the delays....

The article says 60 new trams.

In this article a few weeks ago:
http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,24304466-2862,00.html
Stops for disabled wait for low-floor trams wrote:

(...) Stephen Moynihan, a spokesman for Transport Minister Lynne Kosky, said the Government had ordered 100 new low-floor trams to be delivered from 2010.

So we're going to get 160 new trams. Great! I don't think so. They haven't ordered ANY new trams yet, or they would have announced it. And in the last few weeks, what with all the booming patronage they decided they only needed 60 rather than 100, and they STILL haven't called for tenders!

Edit: The Age article must be wrong as well, because the DOT website says
Quote:

Future deliveries
A further 100 new low-floor trams will be delivered from 2010-11 as the first stage of a $500 million long-term purchase program.

The new trams will replace the current Z Class fleet as well as provide for increased patronage growth.

It has said that for a few years now...

A new 22km tollroad on the peninsular is believed to be in this package.

Im not going to loose any sleep waiting for this statement. It'll be another cop out.

The 4th transport statement since Labor was elected. What projects have actually been delivered? NOT MANY!

Labor are bereft of common sense if they are delivering new roads in this the age of rising fuel costs, climate change and carbon-footprint consciousness.

They will be roundly condemned by future generations.

A new tollway down the Peninsula... hopeless.

Suburban means that the trains stay in Melbourne. I would imagine that the Bunbury St tunnel will be used to segregate VLine and Connex trains - a good use of existing infrastructure.

Although seperating sparks and regional trains would provide huge benifits, I don't think running them through Bunbury street is the answer. It would only take one 1500m superfrieghter to throw off a whole lot of V/Line paths during peak.

The way it was written in the article made it sound like making better use of Bunbury street was an alternative to the Footscray-Caulfield tunnel... Obviously incredibly well researched! Rolling Eyes
