QR narrow gauge bogie coal waggon spotted travelling north from coffs harbour 12.30 pm today. Seen going UNDER the railway bridge crossing the Pacific Highway. Seems that it is now cheaper even for trains to travel by road. Does this mean I can soon put wheels on my car and drive on the disused railway lines? Now the road system should be put under the same economic rationalism and start to run at a profit or be shut down. RTA should be re couping a HUGE sum from road trains like this to offset the damage to our new $250 million 10 km section of Pacific Highway that road smashing loads like this cause. QR should learn from "TOOTLE" about staying on the rails no matter what!

They are being trucked from Tare to Rockhampton.
They maybe to large(out of gauge) for standard gauge rails!
Tare weight is around 20 ton.

I'd be more inclined to say NSW rollingstock is out of gauge for Queensland rails

Seen 1 of those sitting on the back of a truck in BrisVegas a couple of weeks ago in Hamilton. Down near the cruise terminal. Didn't have the camera so I didn't stop to have a good look.

The kwick drop door controls(white levers on doors) are out of gauge south of Gladstone and are fitted on arrival in the Callomandah wagon depo before entry into coal traffic(if coming by rail)or are fitted in Taree if coming by road,(see photo).
They load to a gross weight of 106 ton and run in tandem pairs.

So in answer to the original question it seems the reason for non-rail delivery is that they wont fit on either QR south of Gladstone or in NSW or both (aside from the track gauge).

The wagon looks very odd in terms of how it is sitting, would have thought they would used a flat bed truck, also wouldn't height be a problem up in Northern NSW?

Who is constructing the VCAL/VCAS Coal Wagons in Taree, NSW?
I know RACS Redbank and Bradken Karrabin are constructing them here in Queensland.

Probably too long for a flat top. Using a turntable bolster and a jinker is a fairly common method for jobs like that.

I believe that they are still being constructed at UGR Bohle in Townsville also, with the last batch of heading south from Townsville to Mackay (where the KDD triggers are fitted) on the 9th of this month, and from Mackay to Yukan on 16th.
