Can't help you much with the DL's, however WSITD that it has something to do with cab conditions?
With getting the timetables, most of the time you just have to keep an eye out on here for info on trains, if you are looking for a certain section of track or railway line, create a thread on it and ask for sightings of trains on that line and heads-up about special or goods trains.
If you want direct info most of the time you have to know a railway employee that is willing to provide this to you; or you have to work for a railway company.
Hope that helps,

A sure place to get a shot of a DL leading (briefly) is to watch the arrival of the Indian Pacific in Sydney when it is running as a double consist.
A DL is always rostered as second unit facing towards Sydney and hauls the second class cars and part of the first class cars into (usually) Platform 3 after the leading NR has cut off. The NR then sets back and hauls the rest of the train into Platform 2.
So for about three minutes you can get shots of a DL leading the Indian Pacific. If the train is reasonably close to on-time the lighting is favourable.
Later the DL uncouples and couples to the second NR (facing away from Sydney) that has removed the car carrier and which will lead the return journey to Adelaide. Shots can be got of the DL trailing the two units moving forward to pick up the car carrier after reloading.
While not actually working, you can also get photos of DL class uncoupled at the former NR fuel point at Dynon or at Dry Creek. They are sometimes used as bankers in the Adelaide Hills and can be seen uncoupled at Tailem Bend.

I imagine the reason is because the NRs have better cabs than the DLs, therefore the traincrew want the NRs on the front.

I think it's to do with the backhoe style controls, not to good on drivers back plus I think DL's were the first to go down this road.

crews aren't to fussed on the DL's due mainly to them being very rough riders.

Got this last year with the DL leading to Pelican Point near Adelaide.
I have also seen numerous pictures of DL's leading trains from Tailem Bend into Adelaide in recent times. Mainly the SCT when PN were running the train. I have a few on my hard drive, but they are other people's pictures so i cannot post them.

The only time DLs lead in WA is on engine turns and all but a few of my leading DL photos are of these. They may lead if the NR fails once in a blue moon.
If I was a PN driver, I'd put the DL on the front every now and then just for a change! (and to listen to those engines and horns!)

Back when PN still had the SCT hook and pull, DLs did lead the train from time to time, mainly through the Adelaide Hills although DL 47 did lead the train north of Adelaide back in 2005 to Port Augusta before returning the following day.

Some DL's received cab modifications to allow them to lead Intermodel crewed trains in NSW, more specifically the Dunmore Stone trains when run by NRC. DL50 was one but I can't remember the others off hand.
DL's leading a G or other engine on SCT workings in the Adelaide Hills was due to that train being crewed and worked by PN Rural and Bulk, a DL leading a G is no real difference there as the cab standards RB works too are lower than the NRC conditions.
Intermodel division and NRC before them have a set standard for cabs used on the lead of trains, the NR's meet that standard, the rest generally doesn't so it doesn't lead unless it's a emergency or a short trip.
NR's lead and DL's trail because NRC crews have a specific standard they like to work with and thats fair enough, it is after all your home for up to 11 hours a day, small things like good control layout and electric fridges and windscreen wipers rather than noisy air fridges and wipers make that time more pleasant. Can't blame anyone for wanting to spend there time at work comfortably.
Regards,
Scott
