The Bell street tram (light rail please) is a great idea. So many people need east - west access in Melbourne and buses are just awful things.
A Rail link from Newport to Frankstone meandering in and around the western link road would make for a great service. This freeway is busy 24/7 and that is where all the industrial zones start, where people work which is why they drive...
It would also increase access to 6 TAFE collages and all but one University..

Well, nothing like claiming ideas as your own...
Wow, they came up with sparks to Melton and Sunbury...
And Caroline Springs is in the Shire of Melton, not Brimbank City Council. Just a little heads up there, Greens.
Diggers Rest is the only station in the Shire of Melton to be served on the Sunbury line, also.
I do however agree that there should be a bus between Melton and Watergardens.
Interesting that the Albion-Jacana line gets upgraded to passenger standard with a station at Sunshine North and Westfield, good ideas, I suppose.
Interesting to say the least. I'm sure with this Greens "plan" we're sure to get sparks now...
It has it's merits, but who's funding it and how long will it take. Fancy website aside, that's the facts you need, not photoshopping up a stupid photo of JB...

Stupid idea. The road is far too busy and most of it doesn't have a lot of space to place a tram, not to mention crossing 2 train lines. Though I'm confused by your request of "light rail" do you mean seperate from the roads? if so, good luck with that.
Newport is not the most ideal place to start an outer/inner circle train line. There is no space to add any tracks or platforms. And simply because a lot of cars use a freeway doesn't exactly mean that a train line down it will be packed.

| Quote: | | They can get over it. Buses are cheaper and much more flexible. It is a WASTE of money to extend the tram lines so far out just because people prefer a tram over a bus. |
I believe Sir Robert Risson faced the same opposition as above, though in a partially different context - but the spirit is there. If he agreed with the above - we'd be rather screwed today.
The original extension would be unnecessary then, from just outside Warrigul Road. Then later to East Burwood. And now to Vermont South...

Looking at the site, I'm pleased to see at least something decent. I think the thing is trying to please all you lot, but at the same time to satisfy that of the needs of the general community.
The tram extensions, especially the one to Chadstone i'm quite in favour of. Generally well rounded, but again highlights the issue of stuff we need, and stuff perhaps we can live without. Again; a diverse and well connected network will always benefit communities.

The Greens plan is pure smeg.
IT HASN'T HAD ANY PROPER THOUGHT PUT INTO IT AT ALL!!!!!!
The only decent ideas are those which have been proposed 100's of times and are supported by almost everyone, such as a railway to South Morang, or a tram to Knox, etc...
The rest is either full of errors (perticularly their illustration maps) or lacks any thought.
Why on earth you would build a new dead end underground tunnel from the North to Flinders, and another dead end one from the south to Southern Cross, when you could link the two at Flinders and save money and run things more efficiently, I dunno.
Station at Patullos Lane? Whats the point? Its 2 minutes drive from Craigieburn. Not every property needs a station in its back yard.
Tramway from Essendon to Heidelberg? What's wrong with a high frequency bus service apart from the fact that its a bus?
Sure, people don't like buses, *I* don't even like buses (much), but if the service is there, frequent, clean, reliable, people will use it, regardless whether its a bus or a tram.
I could go on, but I won't.
Melbourne needs to spend smart. If you elect the greens, say goodbye to the economy, and expect 90% of the above plan to go unforfilled.
Views expressed by me are strictly my own, not of my friends, employer, or anyone else, unless otherwise stated.

It's a rehash of Mees and uses the same flawed Mees methodology that X number of trains running back in the day can be run now, ignoring the fact that one train runs more services per day as a greater percentage of services terminated a lot closer than they do now.
Also, a proofreader that knows what a train is would be good. Meduim strip?

Well it's all on their website, so as it looks, it's like it's claimed as their own. They're not exactly saying they didn't come up with it...
In any case, whoever's idea it is, Melton needs sparks and duplication. Simple really! Couldn't give a stuff who delivers it, we just need it done!

Maybe they want the DoT to hire clairvoyants whose duties include channelling people involved in the initial development of Victoria's railways and taking their clothes off.
Where the trams fit in, I don't know.

Yes you are all right. Stuff it don't build anything..it wont work, too hard!
Now I am taking my bat and ball and going home...
A tram down down Bel street will not work states Railpage Australia™ posters.
Right. It would only go past Box Hill Central, TAFE Box Hill, Doncaster Westfield. The Yarra River valley parklands, The Hospital, Heidelberg Connections - LaTrobe uni, Preston Factories, High Street Preston shopping district, NMIT Preston, Coburg - Sydney Road, Coburg Factories and Broady rail link.
Who in their right mind would be so thoughtless as to use such a service?
The Rail link would go past no less than 25 Industrial estates, all rail links and give access to the North from anywhere in Melbourne placing work in easy transport distance. No longer would Joe Boofhead be stuck in Suburban Utopia of nightmare, mind numbing exclusion because he can't get a job because he can't get a car...or it the other way around? Maybe with this poor Joe Boofhead will be able to get to Altona from Cambelfield in 40 minutes as opposed to 3 hours..
Nope! no one would use that....

That's not what is being said - the question is what advantages would a street tram have over a bus for this service (if any)?
Please don't use the old "but people like trams more" or "trams are more frequent/run longer hours" argument.
Present bus services (route 513) are poor - fix that first before even considering introducing a new mode of transport.

Chicken or the egg?
Fixing the bus won't help much. I have seen the numbers that use that service and I wll state the tram is more user friendly then a head smashing bus with chewing gum seats and smelly teenagers who don't undestand they by not washing they actually reek like moldy underwear. AT least a tram offers you some comfort zone, smoothly!

Why?
| Mel wrote: | | I have seen the numbers that use that service |
And they were low? Hardly surprising as the service is quite poor - only a bus every 20 minutes on weekdays, or every 30-35 on weekends, with nothing after 9pm, and poor connections with the route 291 to Doncaster/Box Hill and rail services which can be equally infrequent at times.
That is reflective on the current service level provided, not buses as a mode of transport.
| Mel wrote: | | then a head smashing bus |
"Head smashing"?
| Mel wrote: | | with chewing gum seats |
Do trams have special seats which chewing gum does not stick to?
| Mel wrote: | | and smelly teenagers who don't undestand they by not washing they actually reek like moldy underwear. |
Do these undesirable people avoid trams, and only use buses?
I'm sorry, but most of your arguments are to do with services provided, not the faults of buses as a type of transport.
