snippet from: http://www.theage.com.au/national/tollway-alternative-part-of-new-roads-plan-20081005-4ubt.html?page=-1

News of the road plan comes as the Greens today launch their new $14 billion transport plan — along with a marketing campaign targeting Mr Brumby's support for new road infrastructure.

Under the Greens' People Plan, detailed in an extensive new website at www.thepeopleplan.org.au, Melbourne's public transport system would be expanded dramatically. The plan includes new train lines to Doncaster, Mernda, Rowville and Melbourne Airport.

There would also be a major new CBD metro system, with new train stations built in the CBD at Kings Way and St Kilda Road, in the inner north at Parkville, Carlton and Fitzroy, and elsewhere.

And in an attack ad devised by South Melbourne ad agency Cyclone, Mr Brumby is portrayed as a mole, tunnelling to create "a profit plan for political survival".

The website doesn't seem to be working.

It negates the fact that the state government governs the entire state, and not just Melbourne. It would have been good to see the Green's plan expanded to include these areas (or even just the major centres Ballarat, Geelong, Bendigo and Traralgon). There is no way that the greens can take credit for all the ideas in this and say this is "their plan" or the "people's plan"- much is just a rehash of old ideas we have seen before. Although the graphics look nice on their website, it's only really half the picture. Not to dissimilar to the fake Connex map that did the rounds a while back http://www.railpage.com.au/f-p731354.htm

Do they say how they're going to fund it? Or what timeframe they hope to get it done?

2020 seems to be the target year.

Looking at my local area, Frankston.

Build a new station at Langwarrin on the site of the original station. To serve the nature reserve on one side and a few horses and rabbits on the other?

Electrify to Baxter. My understanding of the old plan for Baxter, was to build a stabling facility for sparks, no mention of that in the discussion paper.
I can't see any justification for running sparks to Baxter, unless there is a secret plan to build a Park 'n' Ride there.

The 830 bus (Frankston to Dandenong) improved service. The 830 is no more, replaced by the 901 (Frankston to Ringwood), which operates on a 15 minute frequency on weekdays. Well researched by them.

That's my 2 cents worth.

In my area they plan to duplicate the line between Mooroolbark and Lilydale "to increase frequency". Ignores the fact that once you get past Ringwood, there's no gap for them. Current setup allows a 20 minute service on weekends anyway.

If they researched the area, they would find that what everyone has been screaming for is improved bus services in the Yarra Valley but their plan doesn't include anything on buses at all.

I have reviewed the website and the plan looks very comprehensive. There are great maps of the melbourne suburban system, which indicate current and planned upgrades for Tram, Bus and Train.

Brian

Another comment about the Green's http://www.thepeopleplan.org.au/ website. If you click on the blog tab, it takes you to a page that is actually not a blog but rather a guestbook. If they don't even know that basic difference, how do we know that they haven't made the same errors in the definitions they have used to develop their plan?

As much as this pains me to say. But I have seen better plans here on Railpage Australia™ then that.

It doesn't really tell us much. Just says they are doing this, and that. They don't talk about extending stabling, or upgrading signalling. Half their bus and tram routes stop short or don't go close enough to anything to be used.

Example the bus through Caroline Springs to their new "Caroline Springs" (which is no-where near the suburb) station.

It goes straight down the middle of the suburb. But how many people would be willing to walk more then 5 or so minutes to a bus stop, wait for a bus, then wait at a station for a train. Regardless whether you have them timed to match, they don't always do so.

If that station was built I believe a majority of its users would drive their car there. Caroline Springs is huge! And when you take into account the developments on its edges as well who are completely left out in this plan.

Its just a lot of pretty coloured lines on a website. It doesn't give enough information. And when you click on "the profit plan" it doesn't debate anything it just makes fun of Brumby. Either argue your points with fact or simply STFU.

This is an outrage...after digging around on the internet for a while it has become clear that the Green's have plagiarised from poor little Genevieve who was one of the 2,000 people who submitted their response to the Eddington Report. View her submission here http://210.15.220.118/ewlna_submission/0998_EastWestResponse_140708_Genevieve.pdf

Is drawing lines over a map all that is needed to develop a transport plan. Perhaps the guys at http://transporttextbook.com/ could blog about this?

I too think that the website is more special effects and hype than informative. I gave up when the Davd Attenborough voice started describing the Profit Plan (I was more intent on finding the "Text-only version" or "Sound off" button than listening to what was said).

The press release at
http://www.vic.greens.org.au/news/add-or-edit-media-releases-2008/the-people-plan summarises what they're proposing.

I noticed a few things in my area, some sensible and others not so:

*Extend the Vermont South tram line to Ferntree Gully
I think it would be better for it to go to Upper Ferntree Gully, including an extension of the 109 from Box Hill down Station Street, which the Greens included in their plan, to join the 75, then have both the 75 and 109 running down to UFTG, therefore removing the 732 bus, freeing up drivers and buses for other routes. Also the re-introducing trams down Tram Road between Doncaster and Box Hill is good, as long as it is an extension of the 48 and not a new route.

*Re-routing the 901 bus via the Wantirna Triangle (Boronia Road / Mountain Highway / Stud Road). Interesting but not sure what warranted such a change (the explanation document says nothing). The current route is sufficient.

*Belgrave / Lilydale line upgrades.
Exactly as I would do it. Triple to Ringwood then Double to Lilydale and Belgrave, but look closely at the interactive map, it looks like they want to upgrade the Puffing Billy as well Laughing

I also like the tram upgrades, including ones past Chaddy to Monash Uni down Dandenong Road (Princes Highway), down Nepean Highway to Moorabbin as well as route 8, 6, 5 and 3 extensions all heading east to the nearest railway line. The same goes for the new routes around Heidelberg, Preston and Coburg.

There is also some wacky ones like a TRAIN down Hopkins Road joining the Ballarat line? Shocked and converting the Albion goods line to it's own separate line, not an airport line, although I do not mind the idea of the Airport line branching from Essendon, although the track would need to be triplicated between North Melbourne and Essendon.

All up, it is a pretty decent plan. Now we wait so we can compare this with Brumby and Kosky's upcoming "Victoria Transport Plan". I'm already preparing for it to be a total disappointment, like MOTC was. Sad
