Some details on the Metlink web site
... though crazily they haven't listed the extra services, only the changed ones.
The timetables on the web site have been updated though, for 9th November onwards.

As expected - more tinkering around the edges.
I was really hoping for regular, clockface frequency on the Werribee line. Instead we have a mishmash of odd departure times, stopping patterns and frequency.
We also lose the very well patronised off-peak express service at 9.51am.
Connex/DoT ... lift your game!

Here's the Age article. Note Kosky's quote.
| Quote: | Melbourne's train network will be boosted by an additional 277 extra services a week from next month, the government says. Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky today announced a new rail timetable which also includes an extra 51 weekly service extensions.
The changes will take effect from November 9 and include an extra 45 morning and evening peak services a week across the Sydenham, Werribee, Epping and Dandenong lines.
Ms Kosky said the additional peak services would carry an extra 10,000 passengers a day. "Our passenger railway is changing from a suburban train network into a mass transit system," she said. |

I didn't expect them to run the Clifton Hill line trains anti-clockwise on weekends. At least they didn't claim them all as new services.
And the Cranbourne will benefit from the new stabling there. It looked almost complete when I saw it on Saturday

The reason behind the anti-clockwise on weekends is because of the train driver accreditation reasons.

Train driver accreditation reasons, so allows for Connex to change direction how the trains are run in the Clifton Hill loop, if they need to do so in the future.

I like the 6:49am Cranbourne. If still stopping all stations I will be quite pleased. Can get off a Malvern, should still make it to Kew by 8:30

Running Clifton Hill trains clockwise will be good for the Werribee passengers who want to use the loop. Good luck changing to a loop train at NME, however they should be able to get onto a Clifton Hill loop service at Southern Cross quite easily.
Via the City Loop.

It's certainly one aspect that appears to have been well-planned.
I can't help but feel let down by the new timetable.. I was expecting something more radical to really make the best of the infrastructure we have.

Pity that there are no major frequency upgrades.
It is good to see that the line to Ringwood will maintain a 15 minute outbound frequency until 22:05 from Flinders Street. Ironic that trains will be more frequent at 10pm (on weeknights) than they are during the day on weekends.
"The trains at Pennant Hills run roughly every half hour. Nobody in their right mind uses a service that shoddy. That so many do just proves how many dumb and/or desperate people there are in Sydney." - MrPC

This is smeg. There is no way they can claim that Melbourne's rail system is a mass transit system.
A True Mass transport rail system would operate something like this:
Peak hour every 2 minutes.
Off peak and weekends: every 5 mins.
Late night (after 10pm) every 7 to 10 mins.
Only when every electric railway line in Melbourne is operating to the above everyday then they can consider calling it a Mass transport system.
Again the shoulder peak times on the Frankston line missed out. I.e where are the extra trains between 5.30am and 7am + 8.30am and 10am inbound. 3pm and 4pm + 6pm to 8pm outbound. These periods need to have an every 10 min service on the Frankston line.
Also sorely they could have provided a few extra inbound peak trains ex Moorabbin between 7.30am and 8.15am and few extras arriving between 5.30pm and 7pm at Moorabbin. These services could have all been direct to Flinders street.

Mass, or Rapid transit system?
I think there is a bit of confusion in the terms.
Bare in mind, these changes are being made without any extra or new trains. Once the new X'trapolis units arrive we'll see more services added across the board.
I suppose in 6 months time there will be another change?
I support both the direct running of Clifton Hill and Werribee lines. Will Werribee trains run from Flinders Street around the loop, or return to their origin direct from FSS?
Just wish they'd boost services on the trams, especially post 6pm weekdays!
