The brand new boiler is due to be delivered to the LEW tomorrow, Monday 27/10.   I understand that return to service will be some time in the new year.

Great pic 8050.
I've heard the loco is to painted in maroon with the original 'Hunter' nameplates. I hope it is. That would look so good.

I spied brackets on top of the sandboxes so you might be right Wink

Stephen88,

Good rumour.  Unfortunately, it is not supported by any truth.

Look at photo number six stephen88, its clearly an ash pan for coal fired loco's.

'HUNTER' it will be.

The sandboxes on nameplate-carrying P Class locos are a different pattern to the regular ones.  They have cast-in raised areas at each end of the top surface, with bolt-holes, to hold the nameplate brackets firmly in place.

ok thank you for pointing that out-i've never worked with or had much to do with the locomotives themselves in terms of matinence or parts so i wasn't certain and wouldn't lnow what to look for

The pictures are great, thanks. Can already imagine her leading 3830 south to visit 3237 and friends. Is there any information out and about on where the boiler came from? I hadn't realised she was getting a brand new one.

It was manufactured by E R Curtain Pty Ltd at Revesby.

Even better I can already imagine her heading north, to Hunter Valley Steamfest. Can imagine 3265 along with 3526, 3642, 3830, R766, SMR 10 & SMR 18 taking part one year. Plus a run to the Hunter would really suit the loco especially with the name plate.  Very Happy

I think you'll be waiting for a fairly long while until R766 takes to the rails.

Thanks Nosecone. I wonder too if we might see her pulling a set of Pullman cars some time, and whether any of those additional to the RTM's set might see service again - anyone care to comment on the condition of the VAM (I think) at ZigZag for instance?
  NSWRTM123 Chief Commissioner

Location: Looking for my house. Has anyone seen it?
The Zig Zag VAM has been converted for staff acommodation.
BTW the VAM is a Mann type car, not a pullman. Wink .
Surviving pullman cars are:
BAM 1 (RTM)
AF 23 (RTM)
AF 27 (DSRM)
FZ 909 (RTM)
FVX 1005 (Private)
HX 1006 (RTM)
ABX 1007 (RTM)
AL 1039 (Private)
AL 1040 (ARHS ACT)
CBC 1089 (RTM)
CBC 1090 (RTM)
CFX 1091 (DSRM)
KB 1104 (DSRM)

AF 27 is little more than a derelict werck.
Also, there appears to a third pullman car in storage at the RTM. During work experience I noted BAM 1 in faded purple brown, AF 23 in faded Indian Red and a third unidentified pullman in faded Way & Works livery.

Thanks 8050 for the photos.
A very significant event now documented.
When was the last new boiler built for a NSWGR loco?  Any ideas on how much it cost?
Clearly the expertise and facilities are available locally to construct boilers for the smaller locos.
What cost to get a new boiler for the 55class or 5461? (If thats what they need)
Ah, to see a 32 assisting a 38 from Picton to Moss Vale again.

There's nothing quite like seeing a new boiler being lowered into place. Sure, there's a lot more work to do, but what a major milestone.
I hope all goes well.

Yes this locomotive will be an awesome sight to see. I to can't wait to see it steaming on the mainline, screaming out to everyone with the 5 chime whistle that's she back in service Very Happy

Just been having a closer look at the photos of the Boiler and have a Question, if anyone can answer.  Is the Ashpan a Hopper Ashpan, which would not require a pit to empty the Ash?
