hello i was wondering if any person knows anything about a heritage train that ran the alamein line? it was from memory mid 90s (deffinantly 90s) and it consisted of a steamer and a diesel but im not sure about the diesel. the other day i just got thinkngi about this when i saw it from my house and raced around to see it go by but all the details i have given are the only things i can mainly remember. id be interested to know who ran it, i assume steamrail and any other details? it was a very random thing to happen on this extreemely small suburban line and i dont expect it to happen again. cheers haydn

I've seen photos of Steamrail's D3 back when it was masquerading as 639, terminated at Alamein. I dunno when though, probably mid 80's?

It was on a mystery tour - there was a "?" fitted to the headlight.

That was K183 and Y164 pushpull. Can't think of the date - might have been 1994? - but it went to a few places including Webb and Appleton Docks and Glen Wobbly. I'll dig up some photos and have a look soon if no-one else can find the details.

55RM and 61RM ran a farewell DERM RTA tour to at least Ashburton. The D3 that SteamToStay is thinking of was in the 1970's.

Anonymous - and proud of it.

K153 took the Vintage Train down to Alamein on 3/7/1977. Photo in Beardsell and Herbert's "Outer Circle" book. AFAIK there were a number of those sort of trips to Alamein, usually had a second loco either push pull or follow down to haul the train back.

The AETA 60th anniversary tour went to Ashburton. That was in 2003 I think.

Ah right thanks everyone. im guessing it was what Deep Throat said since it was mid 90s, though im only guessing its what he says. The consist sounds about right i suppose too. At that time, i was just starting to get into trains allot more so thats why in those days i wouldnt have noted the loco classes etc. I think it might have stopepd at riversdale station, i was in a house a block from there could hear the train and saw the smoke and had time to get to riversdale crossing to see it go past. a very random and odd thing it was especially for that small line

I was also on this tour but cant remember the exact date , one of the cars hit a platform on the up from Alamain was a curved platform was just about to stick my head out the window when a heap of wood chips came flying past , also the fire department turned up when we we're sitting at Glen Waverley .
A photo stop was also held near the westgate bridge

over all some great stories and facts everyone, thanks allot. im interested in the alamein line cos its pretty much mine and because it was part of the infamous outer circle i like to study. so any stories and facts i do find interesting.

bill_billboards, im guessing the station you are talking about was willison, its the only one i can think of being curved and the western platform because it being the return trip.
route 14, seeing a tour of the E class would have been good.
deap throat, that would be interesting if u could find photos or anything else

anyway cheers
