At the risk of being a professional thread-starter I'm posting the photos I promised over in Where is it? land as a separate thread. This is for the benefit of those who'd be interested but don't frequent that thread.

Apologies for the quality. Will get a proper slide scanner one day - these are digital photos of the pictures on the screen.

This was a tour I went on with family as a very young lad back in 1973. I know we caught it from Strathfield (there are photos of us waiting around) but I don't know if it started from Central. I know we went to a kids' picnic at Berrima so I assume the train went to Bowral and we got buses.

Anyway here are the photos. Anyone who can recognise the locations or knows more about the tour please post.

Hard to believe these locos were still functioning well back then but now...

The photo I posted in the Where is it?

A pity you can't see 3820 all that well but nice to see a 32 in action again.

Nice trip back in time - and very nice pics, even without a slide scanner!

That tour departed Central at 8.35am on Saturday November 17 and ran to Moss Vale with a scheduled arrival time of 12.22pm

Departure was at 4pm with an arrival back in Sydney at 7.27pm.

Eight minutes was allowed for a photo stop between Yerrinbool and Mittagong and another eight minutes was allowed between Mittagong and Moss Vale on the down trip.

On the Up trip eight minutes was allowed between Mittagong and Yerrinbool and a further eight minutes between Bargo and Picton.

Special Instructions were issued to allow the double header to run at 100km/h and the locos were to be turned on the triangle at Moss Vale.

I was on that trip and from memory it was advertised as being a re-creation of the old Melbourne Express. I've got some black and whites from that trip and a memory that those two locos really had that train moving at times.

Fantastic info, Stuart. The date makes sense as that's just after my birthday so would have been my big day out. Probably where my rail habits all started!
The "8 minute" stops make sense for the photos except for the one with the train in the distance. How did my father get up there in that time? Can't ask him, he passed away last year.

Glad I could be of service bringing a bit of history back to life.

I wondered about that too mate. I took that figure from the Special Instructions and timetable that the Railways issued. (Everyone on the train got a copy.)

I think it's quite possible that the stops took longer than eight minutes.

Back in those days the tour trains would stop, everyone with a camera would jump or fall out of the carriages, the train would back up till it was out of site while the firemen built up their fires. At the same time rough photo lines would be forming in the few minutes it took for the train to back out of sight.

Then with plenty of black smoke and safety valves lifting the train would come storming back into view. When the locos reached the photo line the brakes would go on and everyone would then run like hell to get back on the train.

Maybe your father took that time to get up the hill but he must have been a fit man to do it.

Funnily enough he managed to get the back of me in one of those photos. I look nothing like that these days but my partner ... who didn't know me back then ... picked me out straight away Smile

Thanks guys. Credit for the photos to my late father. Glad I could bring them back to life.

I did this with some others a few years ago in this thread:
http://www.railpage.com.au/f-t10926.htm
As the gallery is long since dead you can't see them properly so I'll try and post them on Photobucket. One photo there looks exactly like NSWRTM123's avatar!

Will also see how many more I can dredge up. Got a few from Thirlmere in 1977 that could be interesting.

That's probably because I used the thumbnail for that photo, slightly cropped, for my avatar. Wink
